Former goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 following a traffic accident in Austria, according to the BBC . The information has been confirmed by the Austrian Football Federation and Red Bull Salzburg.
According to local media, Manninger's car was struck by a train at a level crossing near Salzburg on the morning of April 16. The train passengers and driver were unharmed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
“We mourn the passing of former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically lost his life in an accident. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends,” Red Bull Salzburg announced.
Manninger is best known for his time at Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, where he made 64 appearances. The Austrian goalkeeper primarily served as a backup to David Seaman, but still made his mark in the 1997-98 season.
That season, Manninger started in six consecutive matches while Seaman was injured and kept a clean sheet. He contributed to a crucial victory against Manchester United and helped Arsenal win the Premier League and FA Cup double. Despite not meeting the required number of appearances, Manninger was still awarded a winner's medal for his performance.
During his career, Manninger also played for several clubs in Italy such as Fiorentina, Siena, and Juventus. He also made 33 appearances for the Austrian national team, including Euro 2008, which Austria co-hosted.
In his later years, this goalkeeper joined Liverpool in the 2016/17 season under Jurgen Klopp. Although he didn't play much, he was highly regarded for adding experience to the squad.
Manninger's departure leaves many feeling regretful, especially those who witnessed his quiet but enduring journey in European football.
