The iPhone 17 is expected to retain the old design without any changes to the screen bezels. However, in 2026 and 2027, Apple is ready to take bigger steps. Specifically, according to 9to5Mac , Apple is reportedly planning to move the Face ID components under the screen in 2026.
This is a significant step towards eliminating the pill-shaped notch that makes up Dynamic Island. Furthermore, this change will also pave the way for an iPhone, potentially the iPhone 18 Pro, to minimize the notch to a single location for the front camera.
Meanwhile, a new report from The Information reporter Wayne Ma suggests that the camera notch may be located in a new position: the upper left corner of the screen.
According to the source, the design of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will only include a small notch in the upper left corner to house the front camera. The source also claims this design is a precursor to at least one iPhone model in 2027 that will place the front camera under the screen to deliver a truly bezel-less display.
9to5Mac suggests that Apple may adopt a similar approach with the iPhone 18 Pro. By extending the Dynamic Island user interface further to the left, Apple could visually integrate the off-center camera notch while expanding the display space for live activity indicators and other content.
However, placing the front camera in the upper left corner would mark a notable change from the current Dynamic Island layout, which is positioned centrally between the majority of the screen.
