A special class in Truong Sa.

VietNamNetVietNamNet25/05/2024

Da Tay Primary School, located in the remotest part of the country, is unique because all the classes share a single room.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the Truong Sa archipelago gained a new school amidst the vast, turbulent seas. This is Da Tay Island Primary School, inaugurated in mid-2023 and put into operation from the first day of school. The school is located next to the People's Committee building of the island commune.
Students at Da Tay Kindergarten attend school for two sessions a day. At lunchtime, they go home on their own to eat and rest.
The school building is well-built and clean. Teacher Ung Van Tuan (born in 1992), who is in charge of teaching kindergarten students, said that the teachers are on the payroll of the Education Department of Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province. He volunteered to teach on the island.
Teacher Luu Quoc Thinh (from Da Tay A Primary School) shared: "I have worked in the education sector for 20 years, spending a lot of time teaching on the mainland. This time, I wanted to go to the island to work, to find something new to make life less monotonous. After nearly a year here, I find my teaching more meaningful."
The classroom is a mix of 5 grade levels, from 1st to 5th grade. On the blackboard, the lesson content for each grade is separated by vertical chalk lines. Teaching elementary school with different grade levels, Mr. Thinh mainly focuses on teaching Math and Vietnamese during a typical school day.
Because his wife also works in the education sector, when Mr. Thinh expressed his intention to apply for a teaching position on the island, he received tremendous support from his wife and colleagues.
There was no internet on the island. The teachers came up with a way to use the televisions they were given, using USB drives to copy videos for the students to watch, while they themselves went to watch at other people's houses.
Having spent many years on the new textbook training team and the provincial textbook selection council, Mr. Thinh has a firm grasp of new knowledge and teaching methods. "It's a pity I didn't get a chance to participate in the 5th grade council before I went to the island. This summer, I will take the opportunity to update my knowledge for the 5th grade curriculum to teach the students," he said.
Teacher Luu Quoc Thinh expressed his concern: “Students must be equipped with English and computer skills to become well-rounded citizens. Even in a remote and challenging location, we cannot allow our students to lack knowledge. We are still trying to make up for it. The photo shows the notebook of Le Khoi Vi, a third-grade student at the school, studying the 'Connecting Knowledge' textbook series.”
With his tanned skin and gentle smile, Mr. Thinh shared: "The responsibility and dedication of a teacher are the 'keys' to unlocking miracles, allowing the young sprouts on the Truong Sa archipelago to grow strong and healthy, so that those remote islands can live peacefully amidst the crashing waves."
Whenever a delegation visits the island, the students of Da Tay Primary School get to participate in cultural exchange activities and take group photos. The photo shows the delegation from the Vietnam Dance Academy with soldiers and the students.
