After the merger, the city has a specialty glutinous rice growing area of about 5,000 hectares, of which the western area accounts for 4,500 hectares and the eastern area accounts for over 500 hectares. Hai Phong 's specialty glutinous rice is renowned far and wide for its fragrant, delicious, and long-lasting sticky rice.
The soil is favorable for producing delicious rice.
As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, many people in Hai Phong are proud of their hometown's famous and delicious glutinous rice. These include varieties like "Nếp Cái Hoa Vàng," "Nếp Quýt," and "Nếp Xoay," grown in specialized glutinous rice farming areas in Nhi Chieu ward and the communes of Quyet Thang, Kien Hung, Phu Thai, An Thanh, and Thanh Ha. According to the Hai Phong Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, after the merger, the city's specialized glutinous rice growing area has expanded to nearly 5,000 hectares, with an average annual production of 22,500 tons.
Mr. Dang Van Lanh, from Giang Khau village, Quyet Thang commune, had just finished harvesting his 9 sao (approximately 0.9 hectares) of glutinous rice when traders arrived in trucks to buy the fresh rice. Mr. Lanh happily shared that although it rained during the rice flowering season this year, the rice grains were not significantly affected, so the yield and quality remained good.
In Phu Thai commune, farmers have a tradition of cultivating twisted glutinous rice. Although this type of glutinous rice is not as fragrant as the "golden flower" glutinous rice, the grains are sweet and sticky for a long time, so it is also favored by consumers. Mr. Luu Van Bat, Director of Kim Anh Cooperative in Phu Thai commune, said that this season, cooperative members planted 170 hectares of twisted glutinous rice. This year's yield reached 46-47 quintals/hectare (1.5 quintals/hectare higher than the previous season), and farmers can earn 200-250 million VND/hectare. Mr. Nguyen Van Tam from Van Duong village, Phu Thai commune, said that this season his family planted 15 hectares and harvested nearly 15 tons of rice.

Elevating the status of local specialties
In November 2025, the City People's Council issued Resolution No. 27, stipulating the principles, scope, support levels, and use of support funds for rice land users. This serves as the basis for the Department of Agriculture and Environment to continue implementing solutions to encourage and support concentrated areas for growing specialty glutinous rice, with a scale of 10 hectares per area. The Department focuses on supporting seeds and production according to VietGAP standards to improve rice quality, ensuring safety, facilitating consumption, and obtaining OCOP certification for glutinous rice growers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, Director of Thuy Huong Agricultural Cooperative, said that the local specialty glutinous rice, especially when grown on fertile paddy fields, not only produces fragrant and delicious rice but is also completely clean. Besides Thuy Huong Agricultural Cooperative, many other cooperatives such as Tan Trao Agricultural Cooperative and Nam Dien Cooperative are key units linking the consumption of glutinous rice varieties like "nếp xoáy" and "nếp quýt".
According to Vu Ba Quyet, director of Tan Trao Agricultural Cooperative, the cooperative regularly promotes and encourages farmers to maintain stable production areas and apply safety standards to preserve the brand and ensure the purchasing requirements of businesses.
