Recently, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Hanoi City Police issued a warning about a scam involving the appropriation of assets through paid invitations to watch movies online and participate in voting.
First, the perpetrators befriend the victims on Facebook, encouraging them to download the Telegram social media app to participate in online movie viewing and paid voting.
Next, a Telegram social media account sends a friend request and messages guiding you through the process of using a money-making service; the perpetrator sends a link and instructions to log in to an account and access a website to watch movies and complete tasks.
Scammers send a link and instruct victims to log in to their account and access a website to watch movies and complete tasks.
Through the first two voting steps, the perpetrators deposited small amounts of money into the victim's account, gaining the victim's trust and encouraging them to continue participating in the group and depositing money into their accumulated account.
After depositing money and fulfilling the requirements set by the scammer, the system then reported incorrect data entry and demanded that if I wanted to withdraw the money, I had to deposit an additional 36 million VND to compensate for the data error.
The scammers give various reasons to persuade victims to deposit more money. Believing that depositing more money is the only way to get their money back, the victims fall deeper into the scammers' trap.
In light of ongoing fraud, the Information Security Department ( Ministry of Information and Communications ) advises citizens to raise their awareness of fraudulent schemes aimed at stealing assets. They should proactively verify the identity of the perpetrator before conducting any money transfer transactions.
Never share your bank account number, OTP code, password, or any other sensitive information.
Do not access suspicious links or download applications from unknown sources. If you suspect any fraudulent activity, immediately notify the police so they can intervene and guide you in resolving the issue.
