In the early hours of March 1st, Lukaku scored in the 90+6th minute to help Napoli defeat Verona 2-1 in the 27th round of Serie A. This was the Belgian striker's first goal in an official competition since May 2025.
When the final whistle blew just seconds after his goal, Lukaku raised his hands and looked up at the sky amidst the celebratory embrace of his teammates.
After his last goal on May 23rd, he was sidelined for an extended period due to a torn hamstring. Another tragedy struck in September 2025 when Roger, Lukaku's father, suddenly passed away at the age of 58, leaving the Belgian striker deeply affected.
Speaking to DAZN , Lukaku broke down in tears and admitted that the pain of losing his father still weighs heavily on him every day. He said that football has given him everything, but the loss of a loved one is an irreplaceable blow.
Since the start of the season, Lukaku has only played 39 minutes in Serie A. He missed the first half of the season due to injury.
For Napoli, this was their first victory after three consecutive matches ending in draws or losses across all competitions. The Neapolitan team remains third in the league table, narrowing the gap with league leaders Inter Milan to 11 points.
Meanwhile, Verona continues to languish at the bottom of the table, nine points behind safety and facing the risk of relegation.
