At a press conference providing information on socio- economic issues in Ho Chi Minh City on June 4th, Mr. Nguyen Huu An - Deputy Head of the Tourism Resource Development Planning Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism - shared the tourism industry's assessment of the current situation, potential, and development directions for tourism in Can Gio district in the coming period.
According to Mr. An, Can Gio is one of the attractive tourist destinations in Ho Chi Minh City thanks to its mangrove forest ecosystem, marine resources, and many unique local cultural values.
However, the tourism industry acknowledges that while Can Gio receives a significant number of visitors, its exploitation is not commensurate with the potential. The majority of tourists still opt for day trips, resulting in short stays and limited spending. Furthermore, the area lacks high-quality accommodation, large-scale entertainment and recreational facilities, and nighttime services.

Representatives from the Department of Tourism stated that strategic infrastructure projects such as the Can Gio Bridge and coastal investment projects will contribute to changing accessibility to the destination, creating conditions for the development of higher-quality tourism products.
According to the plan, the Can Gio Bridge project was started on June 3rd with a total investment of over 13,200 billion VND and is expected to be completed in 2029. The project is expected to shorten travel time from the center of Ho Chi Minh City to less than 1 hour, facilitating tourism development and inter-regional connectivity.
Mr. An believes that once the infrastructure is synchronized with Long Thanh Airport and the regional transportation network is completed, Can Gio could become an important link in the development of tourism and the marine economy in the South.

To address the issue of day-trippers, the Department of Tourism is focusing on developing night-time economic products with local characteristics, such as seafood night markets, community cultural activities, night-time waterway tourism, and resort services that suit the ecological features.
However, representatives from the Department of Tourism emphasized that all development activities must ensure a balance between tourism growth and the conservation of mangrove ecosystems, marine resources, and indigenous cultural values.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the current challenge for Can Gio is not attracting more tourists, but rather improving the quality of the experience, extending the length of stay, and increasing spending value. This is also a condition for the locality to effectively leverage its existing advantages in the new development phase.
