Speaking to The Overlap , Van der Sar, who worked with Onana when he was managing Ajax, suggested that the Cameroonian goalkeeper's problem lies in his inconsistency.
"He has excellent reflexes and footwork, but sometimes he makes inexplicable mistakes. A team needs a reliable goalkeeper to give the defense peace of mind," the Dutch legend commented.
Van der Sar also emphasized that Manchester United has lacked stability in recent years, both in terms of playing style and club management. The team has constantly changed managers, the defense has frequently been in disarray, and it has also been under immense pressure from the media.
"In such an environment, not only Onana but many other new signings also struggle to meet expectations. Looking back at Onana's development, I once thought he was the perfect fit for MU," Van der Sar added.

Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023 for a fee of £47 million to replace David de Gea. However, he has failed to replicate the impressive performances he displayed while playing for the "Red Devils" in Italy. The Cameroonian goalkeeper's insecure handling of the ball has repeatedly cost Manchester United dearly.
The pressure intensified when former midfielder Nemanja Matic publicly called Onana the worst goalkeeper in Manchester United's history. Then, the shocking defeat against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup became the final straw, forcing United to loan Onana to Trabzonspor and bring in Senne Lammens as a replacement. To this day, this decision by the Red Devils' management is considered justified.
In the early hours of February 24th, Lammens shone brightly, contributing to Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Everton in the 27th round of the Premier League. This result helped the "Red Devils" solidify their position in the top four.
