The reason behind it surprised everyone.

Nowadays, thanks to societal development, people live more comfortable lives. Whether it's the hot summer or the cold winter, we can all bathe comfortably. This is also a way for people to maintain hygiene in modern times.

However, few people know that in ancient feudal times, especially women, people only bathed once a year. Historians, based on ancient documents, conducted a study on this issue. They concluded that the infrequent bathing of women in the past was not due to laziness, but rather there was another reason behind it. What was it?

During the Qin Dynasty, women typically washed their hair every three days and bathed every five days. During the Han Dynasty, women bathed and washed their hair every five days. By the end of the Tang Dynasty, they shifted to bathing every ten days. Later, they changed their habit to bathing and washing their hair once a year.

In feudal times, if a man felt hot, he could simply find a river or stream to bathe, but women couldn't do that. They rarely chose rivers or streams; instead, they had to carry water home before bathing to maintain etiquette. For women from wealthy families, it was easier; they didn't have to carry water themselves, and even bathing was done with the help of maids.

However, bathing became much more difficult during the cold winter months. In feudal times, things were still quite backward; people didn't have fireplaces, and houses were mainly made of wood or straw, making them very cold during the winter.

At that time, bathing would become a "torture" because of the extreme cold. Moreover, bathing in the cold easily made people sick. Therefore, bathing became more difficult for women in that era.

Furthermore, the time between winter and summer was relatively long, so they only bathed once a year. It wasn't until later, when public bathhouses were developed and commercialized, that women's bathing and hygiene improved. This shows just how deprived life was in the past.
