It's quite common for actors to have their roles or scenes cut. However, what's important is that the process and handling of this need to be done reasonably and thoughtfully, ensuring a balance between objectivity and emotion.
The removal of many scenes featuring Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc and singer Cam Ly from the film "Ma Da" is causing mixed reactions and controversy. Previously, promotional materials for the film had generated high expectations for the return of Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc and the cinematic debut of singer Cam Ly. However, the theatrical release disappointed audiences due to the significantly reduced screen time for both artists compared to what had been revealed. In particular, impressive scenes of singer Cam Ly, such as the scene of her wading through water, were completely removed. Producer Nhat Trung later issued an explanation and apology, but this did not quell the audience's reaction. Many viewers believe the producer showed a lack of respect for the artists by waiting until the film was released and faced public backlash before offering an apology.
Scenes being cut from actors, including A-list Hollywood stars, is nothing new in the film industry. There are many reasons for this, ranging from adjusting film length and actor-related issues to simply the filmmaker's creative considerations. However, if scenes are cut arbitrarily without a reasonable explanation, it can easily lead to audience disappointment and negative reactions from the actors themselves.
The way the producers of the film " Ma Da " handled the situation after the fact, both emotionally and logically, lacked subtlety, thoughtfulness, and persuasiveness. It hurt the artists and left them feeling unappreciated. Even the producers suffered losses, wasting budget, time, and effort on set, and failing to capitalize on the media buzz from the fans of the two artists. The lack of clear communication with the actors during the post-production phase also demonstrates a lack of professionalism.
The case of the film "Ma Da" could serve as a noteworthy lesson for the Vietnamese film industry. The film market always requires professionalism in even the smallest details, as well as cooperation and consensus from all parties. Moreover, in this case, the legal aspects were incomplete, and the emotional aspects were even more so, causing the film to lose some of its positive image.
