What information is contained in the QR code on the Citizen Identity Card?

The QR code on the Citizen Identity Card contains information about the Citizen Identity Card number and the National Identity Card number.

Agencies, organizations, and individuals can verify citizens' Citizen Identification Card numbers and National Identity Card numbers by scanning QR codes; citizens are not required to provide a Certificate confirming their National Identity Card or Citizen Identification Card number.

In cases where the QR code on the Citizen Identity Card does not contain information about the old Citizen Identity Card number or the old Citizen Identity Card number, the police agency receiving the application for the new Citizen Identity Card is responsible for issuing a confirmation document of the old Citizen Identity Card number or old Citizen Identity Card number to the citizen upon request.

What information is shown on the Citizen Identity Card?

Specifically, Clause 2, Article 3 of Circular 06/2021/TT-BCA stipulates the contents to be displayed on the Citizen Identity Card as follows:

- The front of the Citizen Identity Card contains the following information:

+ Left, from top to bottom: National emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 12 mm in diameter; photograph of the cardholder, 20 x 30 mm; Valid until/Date of expiry;

+ On the right, from top to bottom: SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM; Independence - Freedom - Happiness; the words CITIZEN IDENTITY CARD; chip symbol; QR code; Number; Full name; Date of birth; Sex; Nationality; Place of origin; Place of residence;

- The back of the Citizen Identity Card contains the following information:

+ On the left, from top to bottom: Personal identification; Date, month, year; Director General of the Police Department for Administrative Management of Social Order; signature, full name of the authorized person issuing the card; seal with the national emblem of the agency issuing the Citizen Identity Card; electronic chip.

+ On the right, from top to bottom: There are 2 boxes: Left index finger fingerprint and Right index finger fingerprint of the citizen identity card holder.

+ MRZ series.

The practical value of the Citizen Identity Card.

The validity of the Citizen Identity Card is regulated as follows:

(1) Citizen Identity Card is a personal identification document of Vietnamese citizens that proves the identity of the cardholder to carry out transactions in the territory of Vietnam.

(2) Citizen Identity Cards are used instead of passports in cases where Vietnam and a foreign country have signed an international treaty or agreement allowing citizens of the signatory countries to use Citizen Identity Cards instead of passports in each other's territories.

(3) Authorized agencies, organizations, and individuals may request citizens to present their Citizen Identity Cards for verification of identity and information as prescribed in Article 18 of the 2014 Citizen Identity Card Law; they may use the personal identification number on the Citizen Identity Card to check the information of the cardholder in the National Population Database and specialized databases as prescribed by law.

When citizens present their Citizen Identity Card at the request of competent agencies, organizations, or individuals, those competent agencies, organizations, or individuals are not allowed to request citizens to present additional documents certifying the information specified in (1) and (3).

(4) The State protects the legitimate rights and interests of those granted Citizen Identity Cards in accordance with the law.
