Although the disagreements with the cast have not been fully resolved, this does not seem to have significantly affected the box office revenue of "Ma Da" . In particular, the rise of this Vietnamese film also ended a long period of foreign films dominating the Vietnamese box office in recent months.
In its opening weekend (August 16-18), according to Box Office Vietnam statistics, "Ma da" grossed over 40 billion VND with more than 9,600 screenings, equivalent to nearly 471,000 tickets sold.
As of 10 AM on August 19th, the film had grossed nearly 50 billion VND, nearing the break-even point. According to reports, with an investment of approximately 35 billion VND, a revenue of 70 billion VND would see the film break even and begin to turn a profit.
Earlier, film producer Nhat Trung also continuously shared good news when the film reached the top spot in Vietnamese horror film box office revenue on its opening day with 11.34 billion VND.
When released simultaneously in several countries such as South Korea and Australia, the film also achieved positive results. Specifically, it sold over 10,000 tickets in South Korea in just two days.
The fact that "Ma Da" topped the domestic box office also ended a long period of foreign films leading the pack. The last time a Vietnamese film topped the domestic box office was "Lat Mat 7" in May. Since then, many Vietnamese films have been released: "Mong Coc," "An Mang Lau 4," "Mua He Dep Nhat ," etc., but all have failed to achieve box office success.
At the same time as its official theatrical release, the film faced controversy when scenes featuring Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc and singer Cam Ly appeared for only a short amount of time.
Speaking about this, producer Nhat Trung stated that during the post-production and editing process, many scenes that both actors had put a lot of effort into were removed. "This was necessary to achieve the current version of the film. This resulted in the screen time for Thanh Loc and Cam Ly being reduced compared to the initial plans," producer Nhat Trung said. He also affirmed that the adjustments to the film were entirely the production team's decision and were not influenced by any other individual or entity.
He also stated that the failure to provide timely written notification to both parties was a complete mistake. Regarding corrective action, the producer has met with both parties and is discussing further ways to resolve the issue to ensure all parties are satisfied.
However, the producers' explanation did not receive much approval from netizens. Many argued that using the names of these two artists for PR during the filmmaking process, only to leave the audience disappointed, was unacceptable. In particular, the fact that they only apologized after the incident had occurred was also considered inappropriate.
In a post on his personal page, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc reportedly did not accept this belated apology.
