Water source at the foot of Con Voi mountain

Việt NamViệt Nam26/04/2024

The area at the foot of Con Voi Mountain has many favorable conditions, allowing local households to successfully raise cold-water fish.

During the upcoming holiday, Ms. Dang Thi Yeu's family will sell about 1 ton of sturgeon, coinciding with a relatively high price. In their fourth year of raising sturgeon, their five ponds are now stable. The ponds are located near a water source, with clear, cool water, allowing the fish to grow quickly and making care easier. Ms. Dang Thi Yeu, from Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, shared: "The water source here is quite suitable. We designed the ponds logically to utilize the water from the upper ponds. The farmers here share the water resources, then return it to the fields for irrigation."

The locals know how to share water resources, so even households far away like Mr. Hoang Van Hieu's family have been able to maintain a relatively successful sturgeon farming model for nearly a decade. To save on investment costs, in addition to built tanks, Mr. Hieu utilizes tanks lined with tarpaulin and invests in a system of pipes to bring water from afar to nearly 200 square meters of water surface. "I saw others successfully raising them, so I tried raising a few hundred fish myself. After much experimentation, I finally succeeded. In general, I visited many places, started with temporary structures, and gradually built more tanks," said Mr. Hoang Van Hieu from Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district.

Raising cold-water fish is a significant source of income for the local people.

Sturgeon farming requires advanced techniques and significant investment, but the return on investment is many times higher than traditional local farming models. More than 30 households have taken advantage of the water resources on the Con Voi mountain range, learning from experience to implement cold-water fish farming models. This has become a significant source of income for the local people. Mr. Dang Thanh Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, said: "Currently, there are 31 households farming with 89 tanks, over 6,200 m³, selling at 180,000 - 200,000 VND/kg. The tanks must be properly maintained, and we advise people not to expand too rapidly in order to ensure sustainable development."

The cool, refreshing spring water from Con Voi Mountain is bringing prosperity to the Dao and Tay people living here. Besides raising cold-water fish, the villagers also channel the water to irrigate their fertile fields, promising bountiful harvests. Life is gradually improving, and the locality is more confident in its journey to achieve the new rural development goals by the end of this year.
