Manchester United entered their Premier League matchday 5 game with many concerns about their squad and form. The Red Devils started the game reasonably well, constantly pressing their opponents. Marcus Rashford was given a chance but failed to score. The number 10 striker was also Man Utd's most-shot player.
In terms of effectiveness, the away team performed better than their opponents. Brighton played calmly and scored from their first shot. In the 20th minute, from a pass by Simon Adingra, Danny Welbeck seized the opportunity to shoot and find the back of the net for the home team.
Man Utd lost to Brighton.
Falling behind somewhat affected Man Utd's morale. The team was unable to maintain sufficient pressure on the opponent's half. In the latter half of the first half, Rashford had at least three dangerous chances to score, but his best attempt only hit the crossbar.
In the second half, the situation didn't change much for Man Utd. While their attack failed to make a difference, the home team's defense was vulnerable. In the 53rd minute, Brighton launched an attack down the left wing, leaving Man Utd with many gaps in front of the penalty area. Following a pass from Tariq Lamptey, Pascal Gross easily bypassed Lisandro Martinez before finishing to double the visitors' lead.
Man Utd continued to disappoint in attack. Conversely, Brighton showed superior efficiency. In the 70th minute, Lamptey once again provided an assist with a pass from the left wing to Joao Pedro, who finished from outside the penalty area to make it 3-0.
Manchester United's hopes were rekindled in the 73rd minute when Hannibal Mejbri scored a beautiful long-range shot to reduce the deficit to 1-3. However, the midfielder's goal couldn't change the situation for Man Utd. Erik ten Hag's men created no further chances. They had to thank goalkeeper Andre Onana for his late saves to prevent a fourth goal.
Result: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
