The future of goalkeeper Onana is causing Manchester United a headache as they try to find a definitive solution. In fact, the Old Trafford club has long wanted to sell the Cameroonian goalkeeper, but recent developments have made that plan significantly more complicated.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper is currently on a one-season loan deal with Trabzonspor of Türkiye. However, the contract does not include a buy-out clause, meaning he will return to Man Utd in July.
The problem lies in the issue of salary upon his return to Old Trafford. Because Manchester United missed out on European qualification for the 2025-2026 season, players are automatically subject to a 25% pay cut as a standard clause in their contracts.
Thanks to this, the loan deal for the 1996-born goalkeeper to Trabzonspor became easier. Now, if Man Utd return to the Champions League, that reduction will expire and goalkeeper Onana's salary will automatically revert to its original level of around £170,000 per week.

That's the paradox Man Utd are facing: better on-field performance might actually make it difficult for them to offload a player who is no longer in their plans.
Michael Carrick's team is currently third in the Premier League and has a strong chance of returning to the Champions League. This means Onana's salary is likely to increase at a time when Man Utd needs to find a buyer for him.
According to SunSport , goalkeeper Onana has no intention of leaving. The 30-year-old wants to return to Old Trafford to compete with younger goalkeeper Senne Lammens and is also attracted by the prospect of continuing to play on the top European stage.
This choice further complicates matters for Man Utd, especially as the club is looking to restructure its squad for next season.
Internal sources suggest that goalkeeper Onana's salary increase makes it even harder for Man Utd to offload him. If they still want to let Onana go, they may even have to cover a portion of his salary in a subsequent sale or loan deal.
Goalkeeper Onana's contract runs until 2028, and Man Utd are reportedly required to recoup £19 million to avoid a loss under the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations.
Manchester United's goalkeeping situation could also see changes, with Altay Bayindir predicted to be sold after a run of six error-prone games at the start of the season, while Besiktas are closely monitoring the Turkish international goalkeeper.
Billionaire Jim Ratcliffe once ranked goalkeeper Onana among the players who "inherited" from the old system, along with Antony, Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund, and Jadon Sancho.
According to club sources, all five players could leave Man Utd before the 2026 summer transfer window closes.
