HMD Global may be preparing to bring the Asha line back to the market. The new device, with model number TA-1779, has appeared in certification documents on HMD's website, under the name HMD Asha 305.
This detail is noteworthy because Asha was once a prominent line of Nokia feature phones. However, the new product will most likely not bear the Finnish phone manufacturer's logo.
Information about this device is still very limited. The certification documents do not fully detail the specifications, design, price, or release date. The most notable point is that the device supports LTE networks. This indicates that the device is not a complete remake of the older Nokia Asha 305.
"The challenge will be to transform the nostalgic element into commercial value," commented analyst Kreso of Nokiamob.
The Nokia Asha 305 was launched in 2012. It was a budget touchscreen phone aimed at users who wanted a simpler device than a smartphone . It had a 3-inch screen, supported dual SIMs, and had 2G connectivity. At the time, the Asha positioned itself between a basic phone and a smartphone.
If HMD brings back the Asha, the product could continue to target users who need a compact device. It adequately serves the needs of making calls, sending messages, and accessing some basic services. LTE support makes the device more suitable for current network infrastructure.
HMD's new device can be compared to the Touch 4G, a hybrid phone combining features of both basic and smartphone technology that HMD previously introduced. The device has a 3.2-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, a 0.3 MP front camera, a 2 MP rear camera, and an LED flash.
The HMD Touch 4G uses a Unisoc T127 chip, 64 MB of RAM, 128 MB of storage, and a 1,950 mAh battery. It runs the RTOS Touch operating system. This platform supports several "cloud phone" services, allowing users to access web-based applications via a browser.
The reappearance of Asha shows that HMD remains interested in the segment of simple, affordable devices. This segment doesn't directly compete with high-end smartphones. Instead, it targets users who need a secondary phone, a compact device, or a less distracting option than a smartphone.
However, the success of the HMD Asha 305 will depend on its product positioning. Nostalgia might generate initial attention, but the device still needs sufficient utility, a reasonable price, and good battery life to convince today's users.
