Specifically, about 5 minutes after takeoff, passenger TTPD (25 years old, Vietnamese nationality), seated in seat 11B, suddenly showed signs of ill health. The flight crew immediately made an announcement over the loudspeaker calling for assistance from doctors and volunteer medical staff on board. At the same time, flight attendants provided first aid and an oxygen tank to the passenger.
However, the passenger's health condition did not improve. The captain quickly contacted Vietnam Airlines ' operations center and simultaneously notified ground staff at Phu Bai Airport to prepare emergency medical equipment and personnel. The flight was diverted to land at Phu Bai Airport .
After landing, passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment, accompanied by family members and representatives from Vietnam Airlines. Flight VN158 completed the necessary procedures and continued its journey to Hanoi at 9:10 AM the same day, approximately one hour later than scheduled.
Previously, many flights had to change their routes to assist passengers requiring medical help. Most recently, on May 5th, Vietnam Airlines flight VN35 from Hanoi to Frankfurt (Germany) made an emergency landing at Erzurum Airport (Turkey) to provide medical assistance to a passenger. In January 2025, flight VN1602 from Buon Ma Thuot to Hanoi also diverted to land at Da Nang Airport for the same reason.
