Firefighters then worked to extinguish the blaze, while flames billowed from the aircraft's windows and the nose of the plane slumped to the runway. All 367 passengers and 12 crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
Some burning debris was scattered around, forcing Haneda Airport to close the runway after the incident.
The cause of the incident is under investigation, but the Tokyo Fire Department said there was a collision between the plane and a Japan Coast Guard (JCG) aircraft that was preparing for takeoff.
The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) later confirmed that the aircraft involved in the collision with the Airbus was a MA 722 fixed-wing aircraft belonging to the force, based at Haneda Air Base. The fate of the MA 722 crew remains unknown. NHK reported that five people on board the coast guard aircraft were "missing" after the incident.
