"We are talking about Messi. He is one of the greatest players in the history of football. It is never good news when someone like Messi leaves. I don't understand why so many people feel so relieved when he leaves. He did not receive the respect he deserved in France. It's a shame. But that's how it is. We will have to do everything to replace him," Mbappe said in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy) on June 14.
Messi and Mbappe played their last match together for PSG in Ligue 1 at the end of May.
Mbappe and Messi played together for two seasons at PSG, but their relationship was based on mutual respect and was not close off the field. Incidents that occurred at the 2022 World Cup when Argentine players deliberately provoked Mbappe with unsightly actions were also tried to be smoothed over by Messi.
There is only one thing in common between Mbappe and Messi at PSG, which is that both have an option to extend for another season. However, both chose not to extend.
PSG had previously sought to extend Messi's contract with a verbal agreement in negotiations before the 2022 World Cup. However, in February 2023, the Argentine superstar refused to negotiate an extension because the Parisian club had not yet shown a viable project for the next season. The French club's board of directors also changed their mind about Messi. As a result, Messi ultimately chose to leave and join Inter Miami in the MLS (USA) instead of returning to his former club Barcelona.
Recently, Mbappe also confirmed that he did not negotiate an extension with PSG and had expressed this a year ago. "I did not ask to leave PSG or join Real Madrid. I just told the club that I will not activate the contract extension option until June 2025. We have never discussed a new deal with PSG, but I am happy to stay here next season," Mbappe shared in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport .
Messi (left), Mbappe (middle) and Neymar are considered a "destructive" trio, but they are still not enough to help PSG win the Champions League.
Also according to Mbappe: "For a player like me, the goal is to win everything. But we know we will have some problems at PSG. We also know that at PSG there are shortcomings that sooner or later we will have to pay the price."
According to transfer information expert Fabrizio Romano: "Recent developments related to Mbappe show that PSG club has accepted to let this player play the remaining season of the contract (2023-2024 season) without any intention of changing to negotiate an extension. It will certainly be very difficult to happen. PSG's point of view is very clear, Mbappe will negotiate an extension or will leave immediately in the near future."
