Mbappe blames PSG for letting Messi leave.

"We're talking about Messi. He's one of the greatest players in football history. It's never good news when someone like Messi leaves. I don't understand why so many people feel so relieved that he's gone. He didn't get the respect he deserved in France. It's a shame. But that's how it is. We'll have to do everything we can to replace him," Mbappe said in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy) on June 14.

Mbappe and Messi played together for two seasons at PSG, but their relationship was based solely on mutual respect and they were not close off the pitch. Even the incidents at the 2022 World Cup, when Argentinian players deliberately provoked Mbappe with unsportsmanlike conduct, were addressed by Messi in an attempt to smooth things over.

The only thing Mbappe and Messi have in common at PSG is that both have an option to extend their contracts for another season. However, both chose not to renew.

Previously, PSG had sought to extend Messi's contract, with negotiations before the 2022 World Cup reaching a verbal agreement. However, in February 2023, the Argentine superstar refused to negotiate an extension because the Parisian club had not presented a viable project for the following season. The French club's management also changed their minds about Messi. Therefore, Messi ultimately chose to leave and join Inter Miami in the MLS (USA) instead of returning to his former club, Barcelona.

Recently, Mbappe also confirmed that he is not negotiating a contract extension with PSG and has made this clear for the past year. "I haven't asked to leave PSG or join Real Madrid. I just told the club that I won't activate the option to extend my contract until June 2025. We have never discussed a new agreement with PSG, but I would be happy to stay here next season," Mbappe shared in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport .

According to Mbappe: "For a player like me, the goal is to win everything. But we knew we would face some problems at PSG. We also knew that there were shortcomings at PSG that sooner or later we would have to pay the price for."

According to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano: "Recent developments regarding Mbappe suggest that PSG are willing to let him play out the remainder of his contract (2023-2024) without any intention of changing it to negotiate an extension. This is certainly unlikely. PSG's stance is clear: Mbappe will either negotiate an extension or leave in the near future."
