Mbappe blames PSG for letting Messi leave

"We are talking about Messi. He is one of the greatest players in the history of football. It is never good news when someone like Messi leaves. Mbappe and Messi played together for two seasons at PSG, but their relationship was based on mutual respect and was not close off the field. There is only one thing in common between Mbappe and Messi at PSG, which is that both have an option to extend for another season. However, both chose not to extend.

PSG had previously sought to extend Messi's contract with a verbal agreement in negotiations before the 2022 World Cup. However, in February 2023, the Argentine superstar refused to negotiate an extension because the Parisian club had not yet shown a viable project for the next season. The French club's board of directors also changed their mind about Messi. As a result, Messi ultimately chose to leave and join Inter Miami in the MLS (USA) instead of returning to his former club Barcelona.

Recently, Mbappe also confirmed that he did not negotiate an extension with PSG and had expressed this a year ago. "I did not ask to leave PSG or join Real Madrid. I just told the club that I will not activate the contract extension option until June 2025. We have never discussed a new deal with PSG, but I am happy to stay here next season," Mbappe shared in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport .
