In Real Madrid's 2-4 defeat to Benfica on the morning of January 29th, Mbappe scored his 12th and 13th goals in this season's Champions League. This also helped the French striker set a new record for the most goals scored by a player in the group stage/qualifying round of a Champions League season.
Mbappe broke the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 11 goals for Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage in the 2015/16 season. For almost a decade, this achievement stood until Mbappe surpassed it.
Breaking the record of a Champions League legend further demonstrates Mbappe's growing influence in Europe's most prestigious competition. However, some fans believe that Mbappe's achievement was partly facilitated by the changes in the Champions League format.
From the 2024/25 season onwards, clubs participating in the Champions League will have to play 8 matches in the classification round, whereas previously teams only played 6 matches per season in the group stage. Playing two more matches gives Mbappe a greater chance to surpass Ronaldo's record.
With 13 goals in this season's Champions League, Mbappe is leading the top scorer list, 5 goals ahead of second-placed Harry Kane.

The striker, born in 1998, has consistently shone recently, but he couldn't help Real Madrid secure a direct spot in the Champions League knockout round. Speaking after the defeat against Benfica, Mbappe frankly shared: "What happened today was unusual. The fourth goal conceded was a disgrace for us. Real Madrid must change. Finishing outside the top eight is a consequence we must accept."
With Real Madrid's attack currently lacking consistency, Mbappe will have to continue his impressive goal-scoring form if he wants to help the Royal team progress deep into this year's tournament.
