According to Dr. Hoang Thi Hoat, Department of Dermatology and Burns, Bach Mai Hospital, stretch marks occur in about 50-90% of pregnant women. This condition happens when the skin is stretched excessively, causing collagen and elastin fibers to break, creating stretch marks on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, or buttocks.
The risk of stretch marks is higher in women who gain weight too quickly, have dry, inelastic skin, a family history of stretch marks, are carrying multiple babies, or have a large baby.
To minimize this problem, experts recommend that pregnant women maintain a healthy weight throughout their pregnancy. Gaining weight steadily and appropriately, consistent with their pre-pregnancy physique, reduces pressure on the skin and minimizes the risk of stretch marks.
Nutrition also plays a crucial role. Pregnant women should ensure they get enough protein, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and omega-3s from food to support collagen synthesis and maintain skin elasticity.
In addition, moisturizing the skin from the early months of pregnancy is recommended. Products containing vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, shea butter, or centella extract can help increase skin softness and retain moisture. Moisturizer should be applied regularly twice a day, especially after showering.
In addition, pregnant women need to drink enough water, maintain gentle exercise, get enough sleep, and keep a relaxed state of mind. Experts note that there is no method to completely prevent stretch marks, but proper skin care from an early age can significantly reduce the risk and severity of stretch marks after childbirth.
