"Godmother" - A pillar of support for those facing difficult circumstances.

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - After more than 3 years of implementation and widespread dissemination throughout the province, the "Godmother - Connecting Love" program, implemented by the Women's Association of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police and local police women's associations, has become a support and shelter for orphaned and underprivileged children. With love and care, these godmothers in police uniforms have brought the children heartfelt affection and a sense of responsibility, helping them gain strength, confidence, and aspirations to excel in their studies, creating a solid foundation for their future...

Sow seeds of love

Unlike his peers, Huynh Nguyen Thanh Sang (13 years old), from Phuc Hai village, Dan Luc commune, Trieu Son district, Thanh Hoa province, unfortunately lost his mother shortly after birth. His father then abandoned him, leaving him to be cared for by his maternal grandparents. Growing up in the loving care of his grandparents, Sang's innocent eyes still held a hint of sadness whenever he saw his friends being picked up by their parents after school.

Due to their impoverished circumstances, the grandparents are getting older and weaker, and the grandmother is suffering from a serious illness, making life even more difficult for the family. With a spirit of sharing and supporting children in particularly difficult circumstances, three years ago, as part of the "Godmother - Connecting Love" program launched by the Women's Association of the Provincial Police, the Women's Association of the Office of the Provincial Police Investigation Agency adopted and supported Huynh Nguyen Thanh Sang. In addition to regularly visiting, encouraging, and helping him with his studies, the "godmothers" also contribute 8 million VND per year to the family and regularly purchase clothes, school supplies, and books for him.

Huynh Nguyen Thanh Sang, along with her godmothers from the Women's Association of the Office of the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police, participated in the "Sunflower Welcoming the Sun" program.

Mr. Nguyen Tang Chuong (Huynh Nguyen Thanh Sang's maternal grandfather) emotionally shared: Thanks to the frequent, affectionate visits and financial support from the "Godmothers," he and his wife have had better conditions to raise Thanh Sang. From a thin, shy, and quiet boy, Thanh Sang now lives more positively and opens up more to others. Notably, his academic results have improved dramatically. In the 2022-2023 school year, Huynh Nguyen Thanh Sang received a Certificate of Commendation for outstanding achievements in his studies and training. In the 2024-2025 school year, Thanh Sang will be one of the top 10 students in grade 8 with the best academic results. In particular, in 2024, Thanh Sang will be one of four "adopted children" sponsored by women's associations within the Provincial Police to participate in the "Sunflower Welcoming the Sun" program - honoring and commending exemplary godmothers and orphaned children who have overcome difficulties.

Similarly, the case of Tran Bao Linh (12 years old) in Tho Xuan town, Tho Xuan district is noteworthy. Her father abandoned her shortly after she was born, and her mother also suddenly passed away from a serious illness about four years ago. Lacking the care of her mother and the guidance and teaching of her father, Bao Linh lives quietly with her elderly maternal grandparents. Because Bao Linh was born prematurely and suffers from a congenital bone disease, she is thin and small compared to her peers, even at the age of 12.

Sympathizing with and sharing in her situation, since August 2022, the Women's Association of the Provincial Police Staff Department has extended a helping hand, sponsoring Tran Bao Linh. With the sincere affection and compassion of these second mothers, Bao Linh receives 500,000 VND each month from them. This is accompanied by daily necessities, clothing, supplies, and gifts on holidays and special occasions. Although they cannot directly care for her, whenever possible, the "foster mothers" visit Bao Linh and her grandparents, bringing her warm love and protection.

Bao Linh grew up under the loving care and protection of her grandparents and the "godmothers" of the Women's Association of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police Staff Department.

Touched by the kindness of the "godmothers," Tran Cong Dai, 78 years old, the maternal grandfather of Tran Bao Linh, wrote these words: "My family is in extremely difficult circumstances in Tho Xuan town. My wife and I only had one daughter, but unfortunately, she passed away prematurely due to a serious illness. For many years, my wife and I have lived in poverty and hardship, and now we have to raise and care for our young, orphaned, and disabled granddaughter, whose mother has passed away. Bao Linh is now 12 years old but still has difficulty walking. My wife and I are extremely worried about her future; we don't know what will become of her. Fortunately, since 2022, my family has received help and support from the women in the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police, who have sponsored Bao Linh. This is beyond our wildest dreams..."

90 children have been sponsored.

Guided by the motto "Helping those in need," sharing and spreading love, after more than 3 years of implementing the "Godmother - Connecting Love" program, women's associations at all levels within the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police have sponsored 90 orphaned children in difficult circumstances with nearly 1 billion VND in support. Of these, the women's associations under the Provincial Police sponsor 36 children; and the commune-level police sponsor 54 children. Support is provided periodically, monthly or quarterly, for a period of 1-5 years, with monthly support ranging from 500,000 VND to 2,000,000 VND.

The Thọ Xương commune police in Thọ Xuân district, through their "Commune Police Officers' Sponsorship" model, have adopted four orphaned children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Beyond providing material support, these police-uniformed foster mothers have consistently shown care, closeness, and timely assistance whenever the children need them, thereby bridging psychological gaps and barriers, helping them to progress in their studies. Encouragingly, the program has spread widely and attracted a large number of officers, soldiers, members, and youth union members to participate with enthusiasm, responsibility, and many concrete and practical actions. A prime example is the "Children Sponsored by Commune Police" model of the Tho Xuong Commune Police, Tho Xuan District.

Captain Le Cao Cuong, Head of Tho Xuong Commune Police, shared: "This is a highly humane model, clearly demonstrating the role and responsibility of police officers and soldiers towards the community, especially towards poor children with particularly difficult circumstances."

After the model was implemented, we sponsored four orphaned children, the youngest being 7 years old and the oldest 12. To help them progress in their studies and become good children and excellent students, the commune's police officers regularly visit, meet with, and encourage them, giving them more motivation to be confident and strive harder in their studies. Initially, the children were still shy and distant, but thanks to the sincerity of the commune's police officers, they are now happier, more open, and more willing to listen and learn."

The absence of parents leaves an irreplaceable void. Understanding and empathizing with these unfortunate lives, the "Godmother" and "Children in Police Uniform" programs have instilled strength and faith in these children. Whether in the lowlands or the difficult mountainous regions, these children are welcomed with warmth and affection by their godmothers and police officers in uniform. Homes devoid of parental care are now warmed by the love and care of Thanh Hoa police officers – those who are always there whenever the people are in need.
