Helpful tips for keeping bananas from spoiling quickly.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/06/2024

Typically, bananas can be stored for 2-6 days after purchase. However, as soon as bananas reach their peak ripeness, they can begin to turn brown immediately, according to the New York Post.

The good news is that there are still some tips to help bananas last longer.

First, here are some things to keep in mind when storing bananas.

Bananas are one of the most perishable fruits, especially in hot weather.

  • Avoid direct sunlight. High temperatures will cause bananas to ripen faster.
  • Avoid apples and pears. These fruits also release ethylene gas (a gas released by fruits to ripen themselves), which causes bananas to ripen faster.
  • Keep in a well-ventilated area. Avoid placing bananas in enclosed spaces as this will trap ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening process.

Here are some tips from experts on how to keep bananas fresh for longer.

Wrap the banana stem with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Gary Ellis, director of CE Safety Limited, a UK health and safety organization, shared: Use plastic wrap, nylon, or a thick piece of aluminum foil to tightly wrap around the stem of each banana. You can cut them apart or leave them in the bunch. However, it's best to cut and wrap each banana individually by stem.

This can slow down the ripening process and keep bananas fresh for an extra 3-5 days compared to leaving them to ripen naturally, according to the New York Post.

Wrapping each banana tightly around the stem using plastic wrap, cellophane, or a thick piece of aluminum foil can extend its shelf life by 3-5 days.

He explained: This will keep bananas fresh longer because ethylene gas is released from the stem of the banana. The higher the concentration of this gas, the faster the banana will soften and turn brown. Therefore, preventing the release of ethylene gas will slow down the ripening process.

Store bananas in the refrigerator.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that bananas can be stored in the refrigerator, but only after they have reached the desired ripeness.

According to the New York Post, Dr. Tamika Sims, a food safety and preservation expert and senior director of food technology communications at the International Food Information Council of the United States, said this method can preserve ripe bananas for an additional 5-7 days .

Putting bananas in the refrigerator too soon can spoil them and cause "freeze burn," which stops the ripening process and makes the bananas taste bitter.

Drape

Besides the two methods above, hanging the bunch of bananas instead of placing them in a basket also helps slow down the release of ethylene gas and reduces the risk of the bananas bruising.

Try putting bananas in a glass jar and refrigerating it.

Additionally, Amy Cross, an American food preservation expert, shared a bizarre tip in an Instagram post that she claims keeps bananas "fresh for up to 26 days longer."

Here's how to do it: Cut the banana into three pieces, leaving the peel on, and place them in a glass jar in the refrigerator.

She said that after 26 days, the banana slices still looked fresh and the peels remained yellow, not turning brown. Try it yourself to see what interesting things happen, according to Express .
