"Messi currently has several offers from Premier League clubs and is considering his options. He cannot return to Barcelona because the club has no guarantee and the situation is very complicated," journalist Gaston Edul of TyC Sports stated in a comment on Twitter on the morning of May 30 (Vietnam time), shortly after news broke that Messi was about to make a decision about his future.
Is Messi leaning towards joining the Premier League?
Meanwhile, journalist Hernan Claus of Diario Ole also confirmed: "A move to the English Premier League is a very strong possibility for Messi, alongside the other two options: joining Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia with an offer already made: a salary of 350 million euros per year for a two-year contract; and joining Inter Miami in the MLS, USA."
Barcelona, Al Hilal, Inter Miami: The race for Messi's approval.
However, options to Al-Hilal and Inter Miami were also ruled out by journalists Gaston Edul and Hernan Claus. Both Gaston Edul and Hernan Claus have been very close to Messi for many years and, since the 2022 World Cup winning campaign in Qatar, believe that the Argentine superstar only wants to stay and play in Europe for at least two more seasons to maintain his peak form for the 2024 Copa America.
"This decision has been made by Messi. Therefore, a move to Saudi Arabia or the United States is not possible at the moment. Messi's priority is to continue playing for a club in one of the top five European leagues. The Premier League is an ideal destination and has been considered by Messi, after his failed contract extension with PSG and a return to Barcelona seemed too risky," Gaston Edul said.
Messi's return to Barcelona is seen as a very risky move.
Gaston Edul also explained why Messi couldn't wait for Barcelona: "As I said, this is very risky and Messi doesn't want to repeat the mistake he made two years ago (leaving in the summer of 2021)."
"Barcelona currently has no guarantees, even though coach Xavi has spoken out. They need to sell players, balance their wage bill, wait for La Liga approval, and register other players before even considering Messi. Barcelona will have to work on these things for weeks and it could last until the end of the transfer window. Therefore, everything will not depend on Messi but on Barcelona. But no one can guarantee anything, which is why Barcelona hasn't been able to make an official offer yet," Gaston Edul stated.
Meanwhile, Messi's destination in the Premier League remains a mystery. Gaston Edul and Hernan Claus have both refused to reveal which club it is, only stating vaguely that "there have been several concrete offers." Many speculate that Manchester City, with manager Pep Guardiola, a close friend of Messi, could be the Argentine star's next destination.
