On the morning of March 3rd (Vietnam time), Messi and Inter Miami hosted Orlando City in the second round of Major League Soccer (MLS). The home team took a 2-0 lead within 11 minutes thanks to a brace from Luis Suarez. Before the end of the first half, Robert Taylor scored to give Inter Miami a 3-goal lead.
The second half of the match saw a brilliant performance from Messi. In the 57th and 62nd minutes, the Argentine superstar scored a brace, sealing a 5-0 victory for the home team at Lockhart Stadium. Notably, Messi scored both goals with his chest and head. This was the first time in El Pulga's career that he scored a brace without scoring any goals with his feet.
Inter Miami's 5-0 victory over Orlando City is also their biggest win in history. Founded in early 2018, Inter Miami has had four consecutive 4-goal wins against opponents in their more than six years of existence. These were victories of 5-1 against Cincinnati (MLS) in October 2021, 4-0 against Toronto FC (MLS) in September 2021, 4-0 against Charlotte FC (Leagues Cup) in August 2023, and 4-0 against Atlanta United (Leagues Cup) in July 2023.
The victory against Orlando City helps Inter Miami maintain their lead in the MLS Eastern Conference standings this season with 7 points, 3 points ahead of the second-placed team but having played one more game.
Messi has scored 3 goals in MLS this season, putting him level with Christian Benteke of DC United at the top of the goalscoring charts.
