According to AP, Mexico's National Water Commission and the Mayor of Mexico City have implemented strict water usage restrictions.
Unusually low rainfall has caused the Cutzamala system – a network of three reservoirs serving more than 20 million residents in the Valley of Mexico – to reach historically low seasonal levels. These water levels are 44% lower than at the same time in previous years. Water usage restrictions have been increased from 8% (effective October 17th) to 25% of the Cutzamala system's total flow.
Officials said 12 districts (mostly in the western part of the city) could experience lower water pressure until restrictions are lifted. According to reports from climate change monitoring organizations, the past 12 months have been the hottest on Earth's record.
