According to Variety magazine, Michael is well on his way to reaching the $1 billion global milestone.
Previously, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer held this record with $975 million worldwide. This is considered an incredible achievement for an R-rated historical drama, nearly three hours long, and based on a real-life character.
Before setting a new record, Michael had already become the highest-grossing musical biopic in history, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) - the film about the band Queen which grossed $911 million worldwide.
Michael Jackson shines on the big screen.
With Lionsgate releasing it in the US and Universal handling the international market, Michael has grossed $607.2 million from overseas markets and $370.2 million in North America since its release in April.
The film opened with $97 million at the domestic box office and $217 million worldwide, breaking the opening weekend record for musical biopics previously set by Straight Outta Compton (2015) at $60 million.
Thanks to positive word-of-mouth and returning audiences, Michael maintained its strong appeal throughout the highly competitive summer movie season.
Michael's Trailer
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael recreates Michael Jackson's journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to becoming the "King of Pop".
Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, takes on the lead role in his acting debut. Colman Domingo and Nia Long play the singer's parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.
However, the film also faced mixed reviews. Some critics argued that Michael portrayed the singer's life in too "clean" a light, by not mentioning the child sexual abuse allegations that surrounded him in the later stages of his career.
By omitting controversial aspects, Lionsgate was able to focus on promoting emotionally rich and entertaining elements, such as elaborate reenactments of classic Michael Jackson concerts and music videos.

With this new achievement, Michael also became the highest-grossing film in Lionsgate history, surpassing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), which had previously grossed $865 million worldwide.
For Lionsgate, this is a very positive sign, especially as the studio continues its efforts to build more major film franchises, despite not owning many well-known IPs.
Following this resounding success, the studio is reportedly greenlighting at least one more film about Michael Jackson's life. Changes made during the reshoots of Act 3 helped keep the film's length at a reasonable level, meaning there are still many periods in Michael Jackson's life and career yet to be explored on screen.
Although some members of Michael Jackson's family were reluctant to participate in the project, observers believe that the "Michael Cinematic Universe" could even become a more profitable "MCU" in the latter half of the 2020s – a humorous play on words between the Michael Cinematic Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
