VietNamNetVietNamNet21/05/2023

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, today (May 22nd), the Northeast region of Vietnam will experience hot and intensely hot weather, with some areas experiencing exceptionally intense heat. The highest temperatures will reach 35-38 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 39 degrees Celsius; the lowest relative humidity will generally be 40-60%. The heatwave will end in this area on May 23rd.

Also today, the Northwest region and the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will continue to experience peak heat with maximum temperatures of 37-40 degrees Celsius, and even over 40 degrees Celsius in some places; the lowest relative humidity will be 35-60%.

Tomorrow (May 23), the Northwest region of Northern Vietnam and the area from Nghe An to Phu Yen will continue to experience hot weather with temperatures dropping slightly to 35-38 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 39 degrees Celsius in some places.

However, the longest heatwave in Northern and Central Vietnam, which lasted for the past week, is showing signs of subsiding as the low-pressure trough is being compressed and pushed southward by a strengthening cold air mass from the north.

Due to the influence of a compressed low-pressure trough combined with wind convergence at the 1,500m level, from the night of May 22-23, Northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa will experience showers and scattered thunderstorms, with localized heavy rain with rainfall amounts from 20-40mm/24h, and in some places over 60mm/24h.

From the evening of May 23-24, rain continued to spread from Nghe An to Thua Thien Hue with rainfall amounts of 10-30mm/24h, and in some places over 50mm/h.

Additionally, due to the influence of the Southwest monsoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening in the Central Highlands, Southern Vietnam, and the southern part of South Central Vietnam, with localized moderate to heavy rainfall of 10-30mm, and in some places over 50mm.

During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind, or localized heavy rain that can easily cause flooding in low-lying areas.
