The new 2026 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV marks a new step for the Japanese automaker in its strategy of sharing platforms with Renault – a move aimed at saving research and production costs in an era of increasing pressure on electric vehicles.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV electric SUV also demonstrates that Mitsubishi is gradually losing its proactive role in product development, as many of the company's recent models – from the Colt to the ASX – bear a strong resemblance to Renault.

Nevertheless, Mitsubishi still strives to give the Eclipse Cross EV its own unique character by redesigning the exterior with distinctive two-tiered LED headlights, a closed grille reminiscent of the Outlander, and glossy black details that add personality to the rear of the vehicle.

The coupe-SUV styling that defined the first generation has been abandoned, replaced by a more purely practical SUV style. Although the overall length is only 4,470 mm – shorter than the previous generation – the wheelbase has increased to 2,785 mm, significantly expanding interior space.

The interior of the Eclipse Cross EV also strongly reflects Renault's design philosophy, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a vertically oriented 12-inch central screen integrating the Google ecosystem. Mitsubishi only added a few material and color options to differentiate it.

However, it's undeniable that the cabin offers a modern and comfortable feel with its color-changing electric sunroof, LED ambient interior lighting, and premium Harman Kardon sound system.

The rear seats can be folded down flexibly, expanding the luggage compartment volume from 478 to 1,670 liters, along with a semi-autonomous driving assistance package to enhance safety on long journeys.

In terms of performance, the Eclipse Cross EV is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor delivering 215 horsepower, coupled with an 87 kWh battery pack, providing a range of approximately 600 km according to WLTP standards. The battery supports fast charging with a maximum power of 150 kW and uses a liquid cooling system.

Mitsubishi also confirmed it will launch a cheaper version in 2026, using a 60 kWh battery and a 170 horsepower engine, equivalent to the standard version of the Scenic E-Tech. The appearance of the Eclipse Cross EV has led many to question: is this truly a strategic move or merely a stopgap measure by Mitsubishi in the face of its growing disadvantage in the global automotive market?

With the entire development and production process handled by Renault, Mitsubishi appears to be merely a logo partner. More notably, the company also confirmed that the Eclipse Cross EV will not be sold in the North American market. Instead, a smaller, electric crossover model will be introduced in the summer of 2026, sharing a platform with the next-generation Nissan Leaf.
