Oh, how pitiful orphans are...

Báo Hà TĩnhBáo Hà Tĩnh03/06/2023

Hà Ngọc Quỳnh Như (born in 2009, residing in Trường An village, Sơn Ninh commune, Hương Sơn district, Hà Tĩnh province ) is now living with her aunt, struggling to make ends meet, as her mother abandoned her when she was only 5 months old, her father passed away when she was 7, and her grandmother died two years ago.

In 2007, while working as a construction worker in Trang Bom district ( Dong Nai province ), Mr. Ha Huy Giap (born in 1975, residing in Truong An village, Son Ninh commune, Huong Son district) coincidentally met and married Ms. Than Thi Ngoc Thuy (born in 1985, residing at the same address). In July 2009, after the birth of their first daughter, Ha Ngoc Quynh Nhu, the young couple returned to their hometown of Huong Son to start a new life.

However, the arduous and difficult life in her husband's hometown could not hold Thuy back, so in December 2009, she left home, abandoning her 5-month-old child. Hungry for her mother's milk, baby Quynh Nhu couldn't sleep for many nights, crying incessantly. Feeling sorry for the baby who missed her mother, Giap traveled south many times to search for clues about his wife, but always returned in vain.

Life for Giap and his son went on quietly. The father worked tirelessly, and the son, understanding their circumstances, was very well-behaved and obedient.

Tragically, in April 2016, while working on a construction project in Son Tay commune, Mr. Ha Huy Giap unfortunately fell into a deep lake and died. Since then, the 7-year-old girl has had to live with her grandmother, Mrs. Vo Thi Hoang (born in 1941, the wife of a fallen soldier), in a simple house with no valuable possessions.

Quỳnh Như's grandmother was chronically ill, so outside of school hours, she diligently helped with household chores to support her. However, in April 2021, Quỳnh Như's grandmother passed away after a long battle with various illnesses, leaving her orphaned in their small house.

This is the house where the grandmother and granddaughter lived after the father died in a work accident.

Out of pity for the child, who had lost her mother at a young age and was also an orphan, her aunt took Quynh Nhu in to raise her. Unfortunately, her aunt's family was also struggling financially, barely making ends meet, so taking in the child was no easy task.

"Seeing my family's difficult circumstances, some people offered to negotiate to adopt my niece, but I refused. I believe that whatever my own child eats, my niece will eat too; we'll share both good times and bad," shared Ms. Ha Thi Thuy, Quynh Nhu's (born in 1977) aunt.

Despite her difficult circumstances, Quynh Nhu has always been well-behaved and diligent in her studies. In the 2022-2023 school year, Ha Ngoc Quynh Nhu (8C class - Nguyen Khac Vien Secondary School) won second prize in history in the district-level cultural subjects Olympic competition.

In our conversation, Quynh Nhu expressed only one wish: that her education would not be interrupted and that she could meet her biological mother one last time.

Ms. Ha Thi Minh Hai, Principal of Nguyen Khac Vien Secondary School, said: “To create favorable conditions for Quynh Nhu in her studies, the school has waived or reduced her contributions, and also provided her with additional books, pens, and paper. Quynh Nhu is always well-behaved, loved by her teachers and friends, and always strives to excel in her studies.”

Chairwoman of the Women's Association of Son Ninh commune, Phan Thi Hang, encouraged the two girls, Ha Ngoc Quynh Nhu and her niece.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Huy, Chairman of the Son Ninh Commune People's Committee, said that in the past, the Son Ninh Commune Trade Union had allocated 600,000 VND per month from the salaries of its officials and civil servants to help Quynh Nhu cover her living and study expenses. This small amount is insufficient to provide her with better living conditions. We are trying to connect with various agencies and organizations, hoping to find benefactors to support and help Quynh Nhu so that she can have a better life, especially without interrupting her education."
