Modric's final words at Bernabeu

Modric choked up on the day he left Bernabeu.

After the match, a touching tribute video was played on the big screen by Real Madrid. In the soft light and with thousands of eyes watching, Modric was moved to tears. He stepped out, took the microphone and said his final farewell to the legendary stadium.

"The moment I never wanted to face has finally arrived," Modric said. "A long journey has come to an end. I would like to send my deepest thanks to the club, to President Florentino Perez, the coaches, my teammates and everyone who has accompanied me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."

His voice choked up when talking about his family and fans - whom he always considered the "most precious trophy" of his life: "Without my family, without you, all this would not have been possible. Together we won many titles, lived unforgettable moments. The greatest reward I have received is your love and support."

Closing his speech, Modric smiled through tears: "I don't know how to thank you enough. But I will borrow a quote that I really like: 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened'. Hala Madrid".

On May 22, the Croatian star confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid after the end of the 2024/25 season. Modric's contract expires on June 30, but he will remain with the club through the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup, which will conclude in mid-July.
