On the evening of December 11th at Supachalasai Stadium, "Thep Bew" Puripol Boonsorn, a Thai track and field athlete, brilliantly finished first, winning the gold medal in the men's 100m race with a time of 10 seconds (official time, not 9.99 seconds).
In the qualifying round, Puripol delivered a spectacular performance, finishing the first heat in 9.94 seconds. This time cemented his place in Thai athletics history and at the SEA Games, making him the first person to run the 100m in under 10 seconds. The previous SEA Games record was 10.17 seconds, set by Indonesian athlete Seryo Agung Wibobo in 2009; while the previous Thai national record was 10.06 seconds, also held by Puripol himself.
In the final, Puripol continued his excellent form, leading from the start before ultimately winning. The runners-up were Indonesia with a time of 10.25 seconds, and Malaysia with 10.26 seconds.
This is his second gold medal in this event, following his victory at the 31st SEA Games in 2022 held in Vietnam. He missed the 32nd SEA Games due to injury. This time, Puripol participated in all three events: 100m, 200m, and the men's 4x100m relay. Puripol also holds the SEA Games record in the men's 200m with a time of 20.37 seconds (at the 31st SEA Games).
Puripol is only 19 years old and is currently studying at Bangkok Thonburi University. Not long ago, at the age of 17 years and 260 days, Puripol became the fastest under-18 athlete in the world in the 100m race (sharing the record with Christian Miller with a time of 10.06 seconds). Before the 33rd SEA Games, Puripol underwent four months of rigorous training with an American coach, and as he said, this helped him set the record.
