Athlete Chau Tuyet Van brought home a gold medal for Vietnam in taekwondo at the 2026 US Open held in Las Vegas.
Báo Tuổi Trẻ•06/03/2026Despite being seeded only 10th, this 36-year-old woman brilliantly won the gold medal in the women's U40 standard poomsae event.
This event features 18 athletes, including high-ranked competitors such as Lai Lee Kong (Hong Kong, seeded No. 1), Huynh Thanh Van (Vietnamese-American, seeded No. 2), Lui Lois Fong (Canada, seeded No. 3), Nathalie Peck (USA, seeded No. 4), and others.
"At the beginning of the year, I competed in my first tournament and immediately won the gold medal, which felt incredibly joyful. It was even more exciting because this tournament had so many teams and athletes participating, just like a world championship," Châu Tuyết Vân happily shared.
Besides winning the gold medal in the women's standard kata singles under 40, Chau Tuyet Van also won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles creative kata over 17 with her younger teammate.
Besides the poomsae (forms) events, Vietnamese taekwondo also participated in the sparring events with four athletes: Nguyen Hong Trong, Tran Ho Nhan Van, Nguyen Thi Loan, and Nguyen Thi Mai. Among them, Hong Trong is the SEA Games 33 champion in Thailand last year in the under-54kg weight category.
The sparring competition will take place over two days, March 8th and 9th. After the men's team parted ways with their Iranian coach and while awaiting a new one, the women's sparring team is currently being coached by Kim Kil Tae (South Korea), the same coach as the women's team.
