Mr. Phan Anh Tuan has resigned from his position as head of table tennis at the Department of Sports and Physical Education. A leader of the Department of Sports and Physical Education confirmed this information.
" Mr. Phan Anh Tuan has resigned from his position managing table tennis at the High-Performance Sports Department II. Mr. Anh Tuan accepts responsibility for the recent incident involving the youth table tennis team. Due to his busy schedule at the federation, he was not closely involved in management, leading to these mistakes ," a leader of the Department of Sports and Physical Education stated.
Prior to the incident involving the national youth table tennis team, Mr. Phan Anh Tuan was in charge of table tennis at the Department of Sports and Physical Education, and also held the position of General Secretary of the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation.
On October 2nd, images of a meal allegedly costing 800,000 VND for eight young athletes went viral on social media. Public outrage erupted as the meal consisted of only four or five basic dishes, deemed disproportionate to the amount of money spent. Furthermore, the breakfast, which was supposed to cost 100,000 VND, consisted of only a handful of sticky rice and a bottle of soda.
Mr. Phan Anh Tuan has requested to resign from his position as head of table tennis at the Department of Sports and Physical Education.
Furthermore, the team's coach, Bui Xuan Ha, is alleged to have collected money from the athletes. Each athlete was required to pay a different amount to the head coach. This collection of money is not included in the regulations. In meetings held since the afternoon of October 3rd, the Department of Sports and Physical Education has received reports from the team and relevant parties and is continuing to investigate and clarify the matter.
Following the complaints, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism intervened and directed the Department of Sports and Physical Education to coordinate with relevant units to clarify the matter. The Department of Sports and Physical Education terminated the coaching staff's training and transferred the team back to the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi.
According to coach Bui Xuan Ha's statement, he was holding money for three athletes in the team who were orphans and had been scammed online, so they asked him to give it to the head coach. Upon learning this information, the Department of Sports and Physical Education requested that Bui Xuan Ha return all the money to the athletes.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also requested relevant units to clarify responsibilities, and if any violations are found, to handle them strictly in order to rectify and improve the quality of training.
" The High-Performance Sports Department 2 is finalizing its report before submitting it to the leaders of the Department of Sports and Physical Education on October 15th ," the department's leader said.
