Uses and dosage of longan

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, longan is a tonic for the blood, heart, spleen, and mind. Compared to jujube, longan is considered more effective in treating spleen-related ailments.

Longan fruit nourishes both qi and blood, and is effective in treating insomnia caused by excessive thinking, worry, restlessness, and anxiety.

Powdered longan seeds, called "le chau," are used to stop bleeding from wounds, reduce pain, promote faster healing, and prevent scarring (the powder is sprinkled on the wound).

The powdered peel of the longan fruit is used to treat burns. People suffering from colds, digestive disorders, or thick, slippery tongue coating should not eat longan. The daily dose is 9-10g in the form of a decoction or liquid extract.

According to ancient texts, longan has a sweet taste, a neutral nature, and acts on the heart and spleen meridians. It has the effect of nourishing the heart and spleen, enriching the blood, calming the nerves, and improving intelligence. It is used to treat blood deficiency causing forgetfulness, palpitations, and insomnia. People with bloating and poor appetite should not use it.
