Mozilla is preparing to bring a significant change to the Firefox browser: an “AI toggle switch” feature, allowing users to completely disable artificial intelligence functions.

This move could make Firefox an attractive option for users who are not ready for or willing to experience AI while browsing the web.

Firefox aims for a non-AI browsing experience.

According to Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, the new CEO of Mozilla Corporation, Firefox will soon be equipped with a switch that allows users to turn off all AI features. When activated, this switch will disable all artificial intelligence functions that Firefox provides, delivering a "pure" web browsing experience without AI interference.

This feature is expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2026. Some Firefox developers have indicated that, upon official launch, this switch may be given a more user-friendly name instead of the more direct term "AI kill switch".

Mozilla listens to user feedback.

Previously, in a blog post introducing himself as CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo expressed his desire to develop Firefox into a modern browser supported by AI. However, the reaction from the Firefox user community was not entirely positive.

On Reddit, a post titled "An Open Letter to Mozilla's New CEO" garnered significant attention. The post argued that Firefox shouldn't chase AI trends, but instead focus on improving performance, fixing bugs, and strengthening core features. Many other users agreed, stating that AI wasn't what they expected from a browser known for its privacy and customization options.

Anthony Enzor-DeMeo responded directly to the post, asserting that Firefox "has always been a browser that puts user control first." The addition of an AI toggle switch is seen as clear evidence of this commitment.

Why are Firefox users worried about AI?

While Google continuously integrates AI features into Chrome, such as "Help me write" or AI-powered interface creation, and Microsoft brings Copilot to Edge, many Firefox users remain hesitant. The main reasons lie in privacy and performance concerns.

Firefox has long been a preferred alternative to Chrome or Safari due to its focus on protecting user data. For many, however, AI and privacy are difficult to reconcile, as AI features often require data collection and processing to function effectively. Furthermore, integrating AI can make the browser heavier, impacting speed and stability.

Therefore, many users are concerned that Mozilla is gradually moving away from its core values in pursuit of technological trends.

AI features currently available on Firefox

Compared to Chrome or Edge, Firefox's AI features are still quite limited. This browser mainly uses AI to suggest tabs, recommend tab group names, and experiment with some content summarization or writing assistance tools.

Recently, Firefox on iOS also introduced the "Shake to Summarize" feature, allowing users to quickly summarize long web pages simply by shaking their phone. Additionally, Mozilla announced plans to launch an AI window – a dedicated space for users to chat with an AI assistant and receive support while browsing. This feature is currently in beta testing and open for registration on a waiting list.

The AI switch – a compromise solution.

The addition of an AI toggle switch is seen as Mozilla's compromise approach. Those who love and frequently use AI features can maintain their experience, while those who prioritize privacy and performance can still use Firefox in their familiar way, without AI interference.

In the context of major browsers becoming increasingly AI-powered, the choice to put decision-making power in the hands of the user could become a differentiating advantage for Firefox, helping it retain its loyal user base and attract more people seeking a simpler, more private, and easier-to-control browsing experience.
