MU didn't buy, Timo Werner joins Tottenham.

Manchester United were interested in Timo Werner before Tottenham but decided not to sign him in the winter transfer window, for a reason that surprised many.

Manager Erik ten Hag wants to bring in a striker in this January transfer window to support Rasmus Hojlund, who recently scored his first goal for the Red Devils after 14 appearances.

After 20 rounds of the Premier League, MU has a modest 22 goals, making them the third lowest-scoring team in the league, only ahead of the bottom two teams, Sheffield (15 goals) and Burnley (20 goals).

Hojlund arrived from Atalanta in the summer of 2023, expected to improve Manchester United's attack. However, the 20-year-old star has struggled amidst the dip in form of Rashford, Martial, and Antony.

Timo Werner is reportedly among the names on Manchester United's shortlist. The German striker previously played for Chelsea before returning to his homeland to join Leipzig.

However, Timo Werner was ready to return to the exciting and competitive Premier League. But in the end, MU did not make an offer for the striker.

Instead, he is set to join Tottenham on a loan deal until the end of the season with an option to buy. Leipzig's head coach Marco Rose has confirmed this.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed the surprising reason why Manchester United didn't make an offer for Timo Werner:

“Manchester United also considered signing Timo Werner but then decided against it because they… weren’t yet clear what kind of player they wanted!”

In the summer of 2023, MU spent nearly £200 million bringing in players that manager Erik ten Hag wanted, such as Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mason Mount… but this only showed that new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe needed to tighten up his transfer policy in a more discerning and effective way.
