MU bids farewell to boring style of play.

There are failures that hurt, dragging entire groups deeper into crisis. But there are also failures that bring a glimmer of hope—however fragile—that the path to reconstruction is gradually opening up.

Fans saw a resurgence after Manchester United's 0-1 defeat to Arsenal.

For Manchester United, the 0-1 defeat against Arsenal in the opening round of the 2025/26 Premier League season on August 17th falls into the second category. This is because, under the Old Trafford sky that day, the fans left the stadium not with the usual frustration, but with optimism, even a touch of excitement.

What has changed? The answer lies in the footwork and charisma of the two new recruits, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

A worthwhile alternative.

When Ruben Amorim decided to drop Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho and put his faith in Cunha and Mbeumo, many considered it a risky move. But this risk brought back a vibrant Old Trafford in a way rarely seen before. Gone were the hesitant tackles and half-hearted attitudes; instead, there was intensity, speed, and desire.

Cunha and Mbeumo unleashed a combined nine shots – equal to the entire Arsenal squad combined. They weren't particularly sharp in their finishing, but their ability to tear apart opposing defenses, their daring escapes from pressure, and their energetic bursts of speed gave Manchester United fans the feeling they'd been waiting for for years: their team finally knew how to attack again.

Cunha unsettled William Saliba, the renownedly calm center-back. Meanwhile, Mbeumo turned Riccardo Calafiori into a burden on Arsenal's left flank, forcing David Raya to make constant saves. Every time the ball reached these two players, the Old Trafford crowd erupted, as if long-lost faith had been restored.

Statistics are not on Ruben Amorim's side. 15 defeats in 28 Premier League matches make him the worst manager in the same period since Paul Hart of Portsmouth in 2009. For any big club, that's a death sentence. Yet, paradoxically, the defeat against Arsenal has actually earned Amorim more support.

Cunha has brought a breath of fresh air to MU's playing style.

The reason stems from the style of play. People are beginning to see a Manchester United with a clearer structure and identity, rather than chaos. The three-defender system – which was often ridiculed – this time operates smoothly, helping the team not to crumble under pressure.

Amorim also frankly admitted: "Players like Cunha, like Bryan, only need one moment to make the whole stadium erupt. Most importantly, today we were not boring."

It was a sincere admission, and also a commitment: MU may not have won yet, but they will no longer bore the audience. After so many years of boredom, that promise alone was enough to rekindle patience from the crowd.

Two contracts and an affirmation

Cunha and Mbeumo are no strangers to the club. They've proven their abilities in the Premier League: 15 goals for Wolves, 20 for Brentford. However, when wearing the red shirt, their value lies not just in the number of goals, but in their fighting spirit – something Manchester United have lost since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

In the last 11 seasons, there has always been at least one Premier League club with a striker who scored over 20 goals. Manchester United – a team that once boasted players like Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, and Ronaldo – failed to produce a single player who met that standard. Therefore, the £133 million spent on this pair was not just a transfer deal, but also a statement: the Red Devils are fed up with soulless strikers.

The comparison becomes even clearer when looking back at Hojlund – 21 consecutive games without scoring – or Garnacho, who was publicly criticized by the manager for his poor training attitude. The fact that Hojlund wasn't even included in the squad against Arsenal shows a different Manchester United: ruthless enough to get rid of a useless player, even if the price paid was £72 million.

Bryan Mbeumo also made his mark.

Manchester United still have many pressing issues, especially in goal. Altay Bayindir's mistake in a header situation reminded many of André Onana's disaster last season. The defense remains fragile, and the midfield sometimes lacks cohesion. But with an attack that inspires fear, all the remaining shortcomings suddenly seem less harsh.

Twenty months after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos took over, the signs of change became increasingly apparent. Carrington was being renovated on schedule, Old Trafford, bathed in bright sunshine, once again became a stage of hope, and most importantly: the team began to develop a philosophy. That philosophy wasn't yet complete, not strong enough to win, but at least it had emerged after a decade of being lost.

No one celebrates a defeat, especially a defeat against a long-time rival. But there are also losses that are considered "glorious," because they show that the darkness doesn't last forever. With Cunha and Mbeumo, Manchester United has just found a reason to hold their heads high, even though they left the field as the defeated team.

If football is a long journey, then sometimes, today's defeat is the turning point for tomorrow's resurgence. And at Old Trafford, amidst resounding applause, it is believed that this fall – at the very least – has sown the seeds of hope for a new era.
