Man United face the risk of losing Bryan Mbeumo during a crucial period due to AFCON. |
Bryan Mbeumo is one of Manchester United's brightest stars this season. The Brentford newcomer has scored six goals in 12 games and has quickly become a key player in manager Ruben Amorim's system. After scoring a brace against Brighton, the 26-year-old striker confidently declared that he doesn't want to limit himself to the 20 goals he achieved last season.
However, that form could be disrupted as Mbeumo prepares to join the Cameroon national team for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the winter. The tournament is always a challenge for Premier League clubs because its timing coincides with a busy fixture schedule. For Manchester United, the problem is even more difficult as they will also be without Amad and Noussair Mazraoui.
That's why manager Amorim wants to keep his star striker for longer than the mandatory timeframe. He acknowledges that regulations are the responsibility of the federations and clubs can only negotiate. Nevertheless, MU will still strive to "protect the team, protect the players, and respect the national team."
Manchester United's hopes are not unfounded. Before the most recent AFCON, Erik ten Hag managed to persuade Andre Onana to stay two weeks longer than initially requested. As a result, the Cameroonian goalkeeper only missed one FA Cup match and immediately returned to the Premier League squad when the season ended.
However, the circumstances at the time were quite special. Cameroon agreed because Onana had just returned to the national team after a period of absence, and they wanted to give him the opportunity to settle in at his club. Mbeumo's case is different. He is a key player for the national team, and there is no particular reason for Cameroon to relax the regulations.
Regardless of the outcome of the negotiations, MU will almost certainly have to live for many weeks without Mbeumo. This will be a worrying void, especially since he has been one of the team's most effective players since the start of the season.
