Farmers in Quài Tở commune are harvesting ripe red coffee beans from their mother trees in the plantation.

Taking us on a tour of the coffee plantations winding along the mountain slopes at the foot of the legendary Pha Din Pass, Mr. Vu A Minh, Secretary of the Party Branch of Che A village, said: "This is the first coffee plantation planted in the village, around 2009, by villagers who bought seedlings from Muong Ang and brought them back to plant."

Initially, only a few families in the village cultivated coffee, but later almost every household planted from a few thousand square meters to several tens of hectares. Today, the entire Che A village has 76 households cultivating over 200 hectares of coffee trees. In the early days of planting, the people of Che A village lacked experience in planting, caring for, and harvesting, so the yield was not high.

There were also years when coffee prices were low, so many people abandoned their gardens and stopped caring for them; some families even cut down their coffee trees to plant other crops, but the commune leaders intervened, advised, and encouraged them not to cut down the trees, so the people listened and left the coffee trees.

Notably, in recent years, with stable coffee prices, the people of Che A village have proactively expanded their new planting areas and diligently cared for the already harvested crops, resulting in a bumper crop and good prices this season. Sharing the joy of a good coffee harvest and good prices, Mr. Mua A Do from Che A village said: "In 2020, my family separated into a new household and officially started planting coffee trees on the plot of land given to us by my parents, with an area of about 7 hectares."

After the 2024 coffee harvest, my family escaped poverty, and after the harvest, this year my family was able to build a spacious new house. While harvesting coffee with other villagers on the plantation, Mr. Mua A Do nimbly picked clusters of ripe coffee cherries and laughed happily. "Last year, when the price was 20,000 VND/kg for fresh cherries, this year it has increased to 30,000 VND/kg."

With 4 hectares of orchards currently yielding fruit, the family estimates a total harvest of 20 tons, bringing in over 500 million VND. After deducting expenses, the family will make a profit of over 300 million VND,” Mr. Dơ added. Witnessing the joy and radiant smiles on the faces of the farmers who have tirelessly nurtured each tree for months, the Director of the Pha Đin Coffee Cooperative, Sùng A Dia, said: “Besides harvesting and selling the fruit, people in the villages of Hua Sa A, Hua Sa B, and Chế Á also have more than 11 hectares with a total of 40,200 coffee trees recognized as mother trees, thus increasing their income even further.”

Because the plantations have recognized mother trees, farmers can sow and cultivate seedlings for sale or sell seeds for propagation at higher prices. Thanks to the suitable altitude, cool climate year-round, and fertile soil, Quài Tở coffee has a distinctive, rich, and fragrant flavor that is favored by the market. Currently, many businesses inside and outside the province come to purchase and process the coffee from this area, expanding the distribution network and gradually establishing its brand and value in the market.

As someone who understands the value of coffee and empathizes with the coffee farmers in Quài Tở after countless seasons of "bumper harvests but low prices," Mr. Sùng A Dia, Director of the Pha Đin Coffee Cooperative, also deeply understands the joy of the sweet harvest season for the farmers at the foot of the Pha Đin pass.

With the desire to increase value and help coffee farmers increase their income, Mr. Sung A Dia has planned to invest in a modern processing line with a milling and drying system to ensure that the coffee beans meet quality standards. Director Sung A Dia added: "Along with investing in the processing system, we will guide farmers to produce according to organic processes, controlling quality from planting and caring to harvesting."

With such production methods, Quai To coffee will reach further and establish a firm foothold in the market! Mr. Nhu Duy Dong, Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, said: The entire Quai To commune currently has 1,635.18 hectares of coffee trees, of which 640.21 hectares are newly planted; mainly concentrated in villages such as Che A, Hua Sa A, Hua Sa B, Hang Tau, Song Ia... Coffee trees have taken root and been associated with Quai To for more than 10 years and are now the main crop helping the people here escape poverty and achieve sustainable wealth.
