At exactly 6 PM at the An Tam Taekwondo Club (Long My Ward), more than 100 martial arts students diligently performed movements according to the coach's instructions, creating a lively training atmosphere. Coach Ngo Duy An, Head of the An Tam Taekwondo Club, said: "Since the beginning of this summer, the number of new students at the club has increased by about 40%. Parents are increasingly aware of the importance of physical training for their children, so martial arts is becoming a popular choice. Besides professional techniques, the club especially focuses on educating the children about discipline, responsibility, and respect for others."
At the Vovinam Club at Nguyen Trai Secondary School (Nga Bay Ward), more than 30 new students have joined since the beginning of summer, maintaining a regular training attendance of 100-140 students. According to Ms. Tran Thi Huynh Giao, the club's coach, the large and consistent number of students practicing regularly is due to the summer break. The club is actively preparing for the 10th Can Tho City Sports Festival, so in addition to the regular training program, the core group is receiving enhanced specialized training sessions to be ready to compete for medals. The club will participate in the Festival with 1 coach, 1 caregiver, and 17 athletes.
Martial arts offer numerous benefits for the holistic development of young people thanks to a scientifically designed training system tailored to each age group, optimizing physical fitness, endurance, reflexes, and situational awareness. Pham Quoc Dung, 17, a student at the An Tam Taekwondo Club, shared: "Initially, I started learning Taekwondo because I saw the older students performing the moves beautifully. After nearly a month of serious training, I feel healthier, more agile, and more confident in interacting with others, and my spirits are higher."
Maintaining regular martial arts training also helps children develop healthy habits and avoid negative influences from the online environment. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong from Luong Tam commune, whose son is studying martial arts, shared: "Instead of letting my son stay home watching too much on his phone or TV, going to martial arts class helps him exercise, meet friends, and gain self-defense skills. Seeing him healthier and more confident, my family feels very reassured."
Beyond being just a simple summer playground, grassroots martial arts clubs are also places for discovering and selecting talent for local sports. Many of Can Tho City's current high-achieving athletes started in basic martial arts classes during summer breaks, later maturing and becoming core members of the local sports force.
The sweat shed on the training field not only improves physical health but also fosters willpower, resilience, and a spirit of effort in the younger generation, contributing to a dynamic, safe, and meaningful summer.
