Nga Son mats are a type of sedge mat woven in Nga Son district, a coastal district of Thanh Hoa province. Nga Son district has 27 communes and one town, Nga Son . In the 1980s, only communes such as Nga Thuy, Nga Tan, Nga Thanh, Nga Lien, and Nga Tien practiced sedge cultivation and mat weaving . However, nowadays, many other areas in the district, such as Ba Dinh and Nga Thach communes, also cultivate sedge due to its economic benefits.
To cultivate beautiful sedge, people have to work hard under the sun and rain. First, they weed, removing all the wild grass and mainly the reeds, because if the entire field is fertilized with nitrogen and the reeds are still present, they absorb all the fertilizer and grow very quickly. Then, from June to September each year ( summer ), they harvest, at which time the sedge has grown very quickly and is about 1.7 to 1.8 meters tall. People use a special sickle, unique to the sedge-growing region, to cut it. The sickle is shaped like the number 7 and is forged from very good steel . While cutting, they shake and sort the sedge.
If you have the chance to visit Nga Son, Thanh Hoa, you can come across endless fields of lush green sedge. The locals have two main harvests a year: the spring sedge crop, harvested from June to July, and the autumn sedge crop, harvested in October and November.
The Nga Son sedge harvest season inspired author Le Van Dang to create an album of the same name, which he submitted to Happy Vietnam . Let's all admire it!
