So, what should internationally accredited English language centers do to improve the quality of their foreign teachers and build trust with parents?
Managing onboard recruitment, setting high qualification standards.
Because the input of teachers plays a crucial role in the English proficiency output of students, the VUS (Vietnam-America English Language Institute) system places great importance on the quality of its teachers right from the recruitment stage.
A VUS representative shared that the system prioritizes recruiting teachers from countries where English is the primary language, who hold a university degree, internationally recognized English teaching certificates (TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL), and other legally required documents such as a criminal record certificate, health certificate, and valid visa, in addition to other professional requirements. Candidates must be competent enough to pass multiple rounds of testing: initial screening, interviews, trial teaching, etc., to become teachers.
VUS has a multinational team of teachers who meet the requirements for qualifications and professional certifications.
After passing the recruitment process, teachers must participate in an onboarding training program covering more than 15 topics related to the curriculum and teaching skills, as well as attend internal professional development courses to improve teaching quality. "These training sessions are an opportunity for teachers to hone their classroom management skills, improve their teaching methods, and adapt activities to suit the students," a VUS representative shared.
Currently, VUS has a team of over 2,700 multinational teachers across its system. Of these, 100% hold university degrees or internationally recognized English language teaching certificates (TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL), and 15% hold Master's or Doctoral degrees.
Becoming a teacher doesn't mean you stop learning.
To meet the demands of English language teaching, teachers at VUS participate in training sessions covering over 255 different topics throughout their time there. More than 150 training sessions on curriculum and teaching skills (Inquiry-based Learning; Teaching IELTS, Scaffolding and Concept Checking, etc.) have been organized. Simultaneously, the system collaborates with leading speakers from National Geographic Learning, Macmillan Education, Oxford University Press, and others to provide training for teachers.
Andy Duenas, Senior Academic and Training Advisor from National Geographic Learning, conducted a training workshop for teachers at VUS in November 2022.
Every year, VUS organizes a free VUS TESOL conference, which helps improve professional skills and update on modern educational trends, as well as create opportunities for learning, networking, and expanding the community of English language teachers.
Over 3,200 Vietnamese and international teachers attended VUS TESOL 2023 to discuss global education trends.
Simultaneously, VUS also collaborated with Oxford University Press (OUP) to organize the Oxford Teacher's Academy (OTA) intensive training course for VUS teachers on various topics such as New methods in teaching English to children (2014), Teaching English to adult learners (2017). Most recently, the topic was Mentoring Skills to support the development of mentoring activities.
VUS's professional managers received certification for completing the Oxford Teachers' Academy intensive training course on Mentoring Skills.
Not only teachers, but also teaching assistants must regularly hone their professional skills and pass rigorous accreditation processes to become official teachers. The system continuously organizes in-depth training activities such as: Workshops on classroom management skills, service mindset, workshops on communication and interaction skills with children (praising children appropriately to help them learn effectively, confident English communication, and child protection)... along with professional review sessions and guidance on handling common situations in the classroom. This helps teaching assistants improve their professional competence and become more confident in their future careers.
Multiverse teaching at VUS
The rigorous evaluations and requirements of the system for teachers, such as self-learning, self-reflection, and peer learning, have become a driving force for teachers to strive for excellence.
The success of 183,118 VUS students nationwide in achieving Cambridge and IELTS international certificates is also the success of the VUS teaching staff.
By prioritizing teacher quality, VUS has built a high-quality English learning environment that has been recognized by NEAS as meeting international standards for six consecutive years. Currently, more than 2,700 teachers and teaching assistants are still working diligently in the multi-universe of creative English teaching through courses such as SmartKids (4-6 years old), SuperKids (6-11 years old), Young Leaders (11-15 years old), IELTS preparation, iTALK adult conversational English, and English Hub.
In particular, 2022 and 2023 were honored to welcome nearly 200 more teachers to the VUS community in the Creative Digital Technology , Thinking Math, and High School Exam Preparation programs – thereby expanding the colorful multi-universe of teaching at VUS.
