Luckily for me, there's an entire area here with a concentration of Asian restaurants. From Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Thai food to Vietnamese cuisine, everything is abundant. In fact, on the street corner I visited, there were 4-5 Vietnamese restaurants. And my choice was a broken rice restaurant with a name that perfectly reflects its meaning: "Broken Rice".
Located at number 7 on Beach Street, the restaurant isn't very spacious. The seating area is only about 18-20 square meters , enough to seat around 20 people at a time. However, while waiting for my food, I noticed that there was almost never any empty seats. Some people, like me, came to order and eat, while many others came to buy food to take away. A restaurant can only maintain a steady stream of customers if the quality of its food is good, so I felt somewhat reassured by my random choice.

Ordering is done via an automated machine. You choose your dishes, pay, and the system processes your order, which the chef then serves in order. While waiting for my food, I took the opportunity to admire the meticulously decorated interior, which is rich in Vietnamese character. I must say, the owner is quite sophisticated in combining wall paintings with decorative items that evoke Vietnamese culture, such as conical hats and the traditional ao dai dresses worn by young women.
Because the restaurant was quite crowded, I had to wait 30 minutes before it was my turn to be served. I was actually a little hungry, as it was already 1 PM, but my curiosity about the taste of Vietnamese broken rice in America outweighed my hunger. Finally, my food was ready. A plate of grilled pork ribs with broken rice cost 15 USD (approximately 400,000 VND) and an iced milk coffee cost 6 USD (160,000 VND). The aroma of the grilled ribs and the steam rising from the hot rice made my stomach rumble. And once again, my choice was right! The broken rice here was excellent. The ribs were marinated a little too strongly, but overall they were delicious. Meanwhile, the iced milk coffee made me feel like I was sitting on a sidewalk in Ho Chi Minh City. That's the authentic taste of Vietnamese coffee.

I noticed that most of the customers here were locals, with tourists like myself making up only a small percentage. Talking to the staff, I learned that it was past peak hours. If I had arrived at lunchtime, I might have had to queue at the vending machines, and the wait time would have been much longer, especially during this World Cup when the number of tourists visiting the US has increased dramatically. Besides broken rice, the restaurant also serves many other Vietnamese dishes such as beef noodle soup, rice noodle soup, spring rolls, and fresh rolls...
So, I had another Vietnamese meal in America. Everything went quite smoothly, as the restaurants I chose all gave me a familiar feeling, like eating back home. Overall, after more than two weeks in America, I didn't have too much trouble finding Vietnamese restaurants whether in New York, New Jersey, Miami, or Boston. My World Cup journey will probably be less "challenging" now that I no longer have to worry about missing Vietnamese food!
