On the social media platform Truth Social, President Trump stated that this decision was based on his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist ally whom Trump claimed to support and who won last year's election.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Washington, Trump's statement came just days after controversy arose over the plan to temporarily postpone the deployment of approximately 4,000 US troops to Poland. Previously, many US lawmakers and European officials had expressed concerns about the possibility of Washington reducing its military presence in the region amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The exact timing and mission of the additional forces remain unclear. However, this move is seen as a reassuring signal to Poland – one of the United States' closest allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and a crucial logistical hub supporting Ukraine.
In recent weeks, the Trump administration has been reviewing the U.S. military presence in Europe. Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany amid disagreements between Washington and some European allies regarding the conflict in Iran and the issue of burden-sharing in NATO defense.
US Vice President JD Vance previously stated that the delay in deploying troops to Poland was only temporary and did not mean the US was withdrawing from Europe. He emphasized that Washington remains committed to ensuring NATO's security but wants European countries to "take on more responsibility" for common defense.
Poland is currently one of the NATO countries with the highest defense spending in the alliance, projected to be equivalent to approximately 4.8% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2026. Warsaw has repeatedly called on the US to increase its long-term military presence in this Eastern European nation.
