On June 19th, the French National Meteorological Agency placed 53 localities under an orange alert for heatwave conditions. In the capital, Paris, afternoon temperatures reached around 39 degrees Celsius, while many other areas across the country recorded temperatures between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
At tourist destinations, visitors have to use umbrellas, wear hats, or seek shade to avoid the intense sun. Public water fountains become popular stopping points for many people during the sweltering weather. Authorities also advise people to limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours, to drink water frequently, and to pay special attention to protecting the elderly, young children, and those with weak health.
According to meteorologists, the current heatwave originates from a mass of hot air from North Africa that has moved into Western Europe. In France, the heat is widespread, affecting areas from the south to the Paris metropolitan region and northern localities. This heatwave is not only affecting France but is also spreading to many other European countries.
In Spain, Italy, Portugal, and parts of Germany, temperatures also rose to very high levels, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many places. Authorities in these countries issued public health warnings and intensified measures to prevent wildfires amid the prolonged hot and dry weather.
