Ronaldo is on his way to conquering the record of 1000 goals. |
Before reaching the milestone of hundreds of goals and gradually approaching the record of 1000 goals, winning 5 Ballon d'Or awards and breaking records season after season, Cristiano Ronaldo was just a boy at the Sporting Lisbon academy with dreams like everyone else.
But according to Nani, Ronaldo was different even back then.
The two players trained and grew up together at the Sporting academy before reuniting at Manchester United and the Portuguese national team. Looking back on that time, Nani believes Ronaldo's spirit and personality were evident from a very young age.
"Even as a child, he stood out from the rest," Nani told FourFourTwo. "Cristiano lived football with immense passion. If he didn't win or things didn't go well, he would cry."
According to Nani, that wasn't a sign of weakness, but rather proof of a burning desire to win. Ronaldo at that time knew exactly what he wanted and pursued his goal with an intensity rarely seen in a teenage player.

Ronaldo has had a burning desire to win since he was a young boy. |
Nani also recounted his own journey. At the age of 16, he trained with both Sporting and Benfica simultaneously before deciding to choose Sporting, the team he loved more and where he had friends. That decision brought him closer to Ronaldo.
"At that time, we weren't thinking about becoming legends. We were just playing football and enjoying ourselves," Nani said. "We dreamed of becoming professional players, but we also understood that dream was still far away. Things happen very quickly when opportunities come and we don't miss them."
According to Nani, a spirit of sacrifice from a young age is the foundation for later success. For Ronaldo, that ambition was accompanied by discipline and an intensity of training beyond the norm.
From the tears shed after defeats at the Sporting academy to his status as one of the greatest players in history, Ronaldo's journey wasn't a matter of luck. It began with an almost obsessive passion for winning – something Nani saw from the very beginning.
