Speaking to reporters ahead of the NATO Defence Ministers' meeting in Brussels, Rutte said the issue was not currently being discussed at the political level within NATO, but was primarily being considered internally within the EU. This statement comes as the EU is discussing the possibility of resuming direct diplomatic channels with Moscow in the coming months.

Also at the press conference, Mr. Rutte welcomed the agreement between the US and Iran to end the conflict, saying that the planned reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would be "a major step forward." Mr. Rutte affirmed that many NATO allies are ready to support the initiative led by France and the UK to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
