In the middle of the ocean, the vast space with only the harsh sunlight and sea breeze blowing on our faces made us feel both the majesty and the challenges of this place. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh, Deputy Chief of Politics of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Military Command, smiled friendly: "The harsh sunlight and wind do not discourage the soldiers on the island. The officers and soldiers of the unit find joy in taking care of the landscape and preserving the living environment. They have turned this place into a colorful space."
As soon as we entered the unit gate, the natural rocks were covered in brilliant colors, radiating a strong vitality amidst the sun and sea breeze. The walls and rocks were decorated with vivid paintings, full of political, historical and cultural content, making us amazed by the ingenuity and dedication of the island soldiers.

After a few minutes of meeting and exchanging, we witnessed the landscape decoration activities of the officers and soldiers here. On the main campus, under the golden sunlight, Captain Huynh Duc Trung, Political Commissar of the Hon Tre Island Mixed Company, stood in front of the central rock, holding a brush, his eyes attentively observing each stroke of paint that had faded due to the sun, wind and sea salt. He leaned over, pointed at each point that needed to be retouched, and explained in detail how to mix colors evenly, how to draw sharp lines that were still in harmony with the overall picture to the soldiers.
“This part of the red must be a little darker, comrades pay attention to repainting carefully so that it doesn’t fade when the sun comes up,” Captain Huynh Duc Trung’s voice rang out. He walked around the rock, step by step instructing the soldiers to hold the brush at the right angle, keeping a steady pace so that the color adheres firmly to the rough surface. The soldiers followed closely, observing attentively, listening to every word. Sergeant Cao Hoang Ung bent down to meticulously apply each white stroke; Private Le Hoang Huy mixed in a bright yellow; while Sergeant Dang Hong Canh adjusted the navy blue to make the background color more vivid. Each brush stroke, each color seemed to convey pride, responsibility and love for the unit, the sea and the islands into each painting.
Not only stopping at the central rock, around the barracks there are also many walls and stone slabs painted with pictures of homeland landscapes, sea, islands or action slogans. The deep blue of the sea, the bright yellow of the sun, mixed with the brilliant red, all create a green, clean, beautiful space, both friendly, close and full of military culture. The paintings make every corner of the barracks come alive like an art gallery in the middle of the island.
According to Captain Huynh Duc Trung, when decorating the landscape, they often choose oil paint that can withstand the sun, rain and sea salt. All oil paint must be purchased from the mainland. Every time they go to the port, officers and soldiers take advantage of civilian boats to go to Vinh Nguyen market (Nha Trang ward, Khanh Hoa province) to choose and buy a full set of colors.
Those simple colors, through the hands of the "soldier painters", have breathed new life into Hon Tre Island. Each wall and rock block seems to have been breathed with a fresh, artistic soul, affirming the spirit of overcoming difficulties and sticking to the front lines of the Hon Tre Island Mixed Company./.
