Spain has eight non-English-language titles on Netflix’s most-watched list. That’s more than rivals with popular streaming content, including France with five; South Korea, Mexico, and Norway with two each; and Germany with one. Spanish content is among the most popular in the world , along with Korean and Japanese content.

Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, said that over the past 10 years, Spanish content has grown tremendously on the online platform. Specifically, by 2024, there will be 5 billion hours of Spanish content watched on Netflix. Therefore, Netflix announced that it will invest more than 1 billion Euros in Spanish content production between 2025 and 2028. This includes plans to build a world-class production center in Tres Cantos to serve local production activities. Netflix's development strategy is to directly attract local audiences through local stories. Accordingly, this unit has also invested in many local content production facilities in Korea, Southeast Asia and recently Spain. Netflix estimates that it has more than 700 users, and more than 2/3 of these users live outside the US, and local content is more popular with users.

For example, the Spanish “Money Heist” (pictured) was released globally by Netflix in 2017 and quickly exploded, becoming Netflix’s first global non-English blockbuster. To date, the following seasons of the show are still very popular. Seasons 4 and 5 of “Money Heist” are currently in the Top 10 most watched shows on Netflix (regardless of language). The success of “Money Heist” has opened the door for local content to be invested in. Accordingly, a series of Spanish films have been produced with new and dramatic content such as: “Society of the Snow”, “Elite”, “Platform”, “Mirage”… In which, “Society of the Snow” was the representative of Spain nominated for the 2024 Oscar in the category of Best International Film. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that over the past decade, the arrival of Netflix has profoundly changed the way the world sees Spain through film. Since then, thousands of Spanish content creators have continued to create new stories, crossing borders to conquer global audiences. This has also facilitated the development of the film industry in Spain.
