Spain contributed 8 non-English language shows and films to Netflix's list of most-watched content. This number surpasses competitors with currently popular online content, such as: France with 5 shows; South Korea, Mexico, and Norway each with 2 shows; and Germany with 1 show. Spanish content is among the most popular content globally , alongside South Korean and Japanese content.

Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, stated that over the past 10 years, Spanish content has experienced extraordinary growth on the streaming platform. Specifically, he projected that by 2024, there would be 5 billion hours of Spanish content watched on Netflix. Therefore, Netflix announced plans to invest over €1 billion in Spanish content production between 2025 and 2028. This includes plans to build a world-class production center in Tres Cantos to support local production. Netflix's development strategy is to directly engage local audiences through authentic stories. Accordingly, the company has invested in numerous local content production facilities in South Korea, Southeast Asia, and recently, Spain. Netflix estimates it has over 700 million users, with more than two-thirds living outside the US, and local content is particularly popular among them.

For example, the Spanish series “Money Heist” (pictured), which Netflix released globally in 2017, quickly became a global hit, becoming Netflix's first non-English language blockbuster. To this day, subsequent seasons remain very popular. Seasons 4 and 5 of “Money Heist” are currently in the Top 10 most-watched shows on Netflix (regardless of language). The success of “Money Heist” paved the way for increased investment in local content. Consequently, a series of Spanish films with novel and dramatic storylines have been produced, such as: “Society of the Snow”, “Elite”, “Platform”, “Mirage”… “Society of the Snow” was even nominated for the 2024 Oscar for Best International Film. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that, over the past decade, the arrival of Netflix has profoundly changed how the world perceives Spain through film. Since then, thousands of Spanish content creators have continuously crafted new stories, transcending borders to reach global audiences. This has also facilitated the development of the film industry in Spain.
